O WORSHIP THE KING!

Psalm 104:1

“Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty.”

Robert Grant lived from 1779 to 1838. Robert was elected to Parliament and was also appointed governor of Bombay. A medical college in India was named in his honor. He was knighted and became “Sir” Robert Grant.

In spite of the earthly recognition which he received, Sir Robert was very much aware that there was the true King that surpassed all human kings. In verse five he describes this King of kings as; “Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.”

“O Worship the King“

O worship the King, all glorious above,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

O tell of His might, O sing of His grace,
Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old;
Established it fast by a changeless decree,
And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

O measureless might! Ineffable love!
While angels delight to worship Thee above,
The humbler creation, though feeble their lays,
With true adoration shall all sing Thy praise.

WHITER THAN SNOW!

Psalm 51:6-7

“Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts, And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.”

I am not sure if you have ever been stuck with the task of picking out paint colors for a room. You may think that something is too pink, until you compare it beside red. Tan may appear white when you place it beside brown, but that same tan color will seem to be very dark when placed beside pure white.

It is the same way in our Christian life. When we compare our walk with the sin and degradation of a lost perverted world we can convince ourselves that we look fairly pure and white. It is when we stand next to the measure of God’s Word we can look dark and dingy.

Perhaps it was this awareness of just how impure he was in comparison to God’s holiness that prompted James L. Nicholson, to pen the words to that old hymn of the church, “Whiter Than Snow.” May it also be our prayer.

“Whiter Than Snow”

Lord Jesus, I long to be perfectly whole;
I want Thee forever to live in my soul;
Break down every idol, cast out every foe?
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Refrain: Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, let nothing unholy remain,
Apply Thine own blood and extract every stain;
To get this blest cleansing, I all things forego—
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Refrain: Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Lord Jesus, for this I most humbly entreat,
I wait, blessed Lord, at Thy crucified feet,
By faith for my cleansing, I see thy blood flow—
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Refrain: Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

The blessing by faith, I receive from above;
Oh, glory! my soul is made perfect in love;
My prayer has prevailed, and this moment I know,
The blood is applied, I am whiter than snow.

Refrain: Whiter than snow, yes, whiter than snow,
Now wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

WE CAN TYPE!

Psalm 15:1-3

“Lord, who shall abide in Thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in Thy holy hill?  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.  He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbor, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.”

Years ago I happened upon a book that had an impact on my life — “Miracle In Moscow” by David Benson. David was a businessman who made many trips to Russia during the days when the Soviet government fought against true believers of Jesus Christ. They made it a criminal offense to possess a copy of the Bible. In this godless atmosphere, neighbors reported any sort of activity that the police could investigate for violations.

Many home church groups owned only a few copies of the Word and cherished it beyond measure. In one small group there was a precious old couple. Both were terribly crippled with arthritis and felt they had nothing they could do for the Lord. They owned an old manual typewriter on which they typed pages of Scripture to be passed along to believers. They knew if it was used in a normal fashion, the neighbors in the apartment next to them would report the suspicious activity to the police.

Because of their handicapped condition, the wife could strike one letter at a time so slowly that it did not sound like typing to prying ears next door. The husband assisted by inserting blank paper into the roller and removing the typed pages. Many portions of Scripture were created in this manner. God’s Word reached hearts that were eager to hear.

As I read the words that David wrote, I wondered if I had as much love for the Word. I had to confess that I did not and could only pray that God would forgive my indifference and give me a love like I had never had before.  How eager are you to search out and discover God’s Word?

UNDER HIS WINGS!

Psalm 91:4

“He shall cover thee with His feathers, and under His wings shalt thou trust: His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

My daughter Lori and I have an agreement concerning humming bird cams. When one of us runs across a cam on the Internet, we call the other one and for days or weeks we are able to observe these incredible little creatures.

The tiny eggs are incredibly small and when they hatch it is hard to believe that such a small bird can survive. As a matter of fact they couldn’t without the care and protection of their mother. She faithfully sets on her clutch of eggs until they hatch, then feeds and covers the baby birds under her protective wings until they are able to leave the nest.

The Lord wants to cover us with His wings and provide our every need. He not only provides us with nourishing spiritual food from His Word, He also covers us with His wings and protects us. Any trial we experience is filtered through His tender and loving care for us. He always covers us with His wings.

“Under His Wings“

Under His wings, I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild.
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.

Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.

Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.

Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.

Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are over;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I?m safe evermore.

Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.

IT’S THE TRUTH!

Psalm 15:1-3

“Lord, who shall abide in Thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in Thy holy hill?  He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.  He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor.”

From time to time, I can vividly recall incidents from my past when, more often than not, I cannot even remember what I was to pick up at the store. Oh, well, I refuse to try and understand the whys and wherefores, but just give the Lord thanks for allowing me to bring these illustrations and make a spiritual application.

The police had arrested a young teen for shoplifting. When I made contact with the boy’s parents I was in for a surprise. The father was a tiny, meek sort of man, just over five feet tall. The mother was several inches taller and had a severe speech impediment, especially when she was nervous.

The boy had become a repeated offender and the prosecutor finally asked for a full court hearing. After the prosecutor stated all of the charges against the boy, the judge asked if the parents had any comment. The mother stood and excitedly began to utter sounds, but it was virtually impossible to understand what she was saying. The judge raised his hand and asked for her to be seated.

He asked the boy’s father to stand. He said, “Sir, I do not mean to be insulting, but I could not understand a word your wife was saying. Could you please tell me what she said?” The tiny man stood and in a loud voice said, “What my wife said was the truth!” With that he sat down. (The judge immediately called for a recess before he burst out laughing).

Speaking the truth before the Lord is never a laughing matter. There will come a day when every secret will be revealed and what is spoken in darkness will come to light. It is for this reason that, as believers, we need to be careful to always speak the truth and speak it in love.

HOPE FOR THE HOPEFUL!

Psalm 33:20-22

“Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield. For our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we have trusted in His holy name. Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us, just as we hope in You.”

Last night I received a telephone call that sounded like one of my friends. The caller kept asking if it really was me. As I listened more carefully to the voice, I realized that it was not my friend—I quickly became serious and identified myself.

The call was from a correctional institution in our state and the caller is confined to that facility. A friend of ours volunteers to minister to the young men there, and he has been sharing some of the Daily-E-Votionals with several of them. The young man that called me has been reading them, and his life is turning around.

Since an early age he has been involved in criminal activity that started out as a reaction to the violence he observed in his home. Feelings of hostility and anger have caused him to repeatedly offend, and this young man has spent most of his life in correctional facilities. Now he wants to break that cycle.

How do you bring hope into the life of someone who is faced with hopelessness? The answer is found in today’s Scripture. There are many other passages that offer answers, but as we consider this passage, it is well to see what steps the hopeful one is to take:  “Wait for the LORD.”  Waiting is one of the hardest tasks, but do it! “Rejoice in Him.”  Make praise a vital part of every waking moment. “Hope in Him.”  Let this “Hope” be a confident expectation that God is going to change us.
