PRAISE HIM! PRAISE HIM!

Psalm 33:1-3

Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him. Praise the Lord with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy.

What a wonderful woman! She stood less than five feet tall and weighed less than 100 pounds. Because of being maltreated for an eye infection when she was only a few months old, she spent the remained of her 95 years totally blind.

Her name was Fanny J. Crosby. This tiny dynamo wrote over 8,000 poems and hymns during her lifetime. She composed her poems and hymns entirely in her mind and then dictated them to a stenographer. She was said to be able to work on as many as twelve hymns at once before dictating them all out.

Fanny felt that it was a special gift from God that she should be blind all of her life and she thanked Him for that gift. She felt that once she arrived in heaven the first face she desired to gladden her sight was he precious Savior. It was in 1896 that she wrote the hymn selected this week.

Praise Him! Praise Him!

1. Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O Earth, His wonderful love proclaim!
Hail Him! Hail Him! Highest archangels in glory;
strength and honor give to His holy name!
Like a shepherd Jesus will guard His children,
in His arms He carries them all day long:

Refrain: Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness; praise him! Praise him ever in joyful song!

2. Praise him! Praise him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins he suffered, and bled and died;
He our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation,
Hail Him! Hail Him! Jesus the Crucified.
Sound His praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows,
love unbounded, wonderful deep and strong:

Refrain: Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness; praise Him! Praise Him ever in joyful song!

3. Praise Him! praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Heavenly portals loud with hosannas ring!
Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever;
crown Him! crown Him! Prophet and Priest and King!
Christ is coming! over the world victorious,
power and glory unto the Lord belong.

Refrain: Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent greatness; praise Him! Praise Him ever in joyful song!

HO, EVERYONE WHO IS THIRSTY!

Psalm 42:1-2

“As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”

Watch Video

Hunger is a need that may be suppressed for many days without harm. Fasting in fact has been shown to have positive aspects and is thought to be beneficial to the body. Thirst, on the other hand is something which cannot be ignored. The dehydration of the body can quickly lead to death, as we have seen the tragic reality of in recent years with the deaths of athletes who exerted themselves in hot temperatures.

David confesses that he longs for a closer fellowship with the Lord. He likens his desire to being in a desert and almost dying for spiritual water. How did he get this way? Let’s try to imagine what that looks like, and to see if you may be suffering from the ailment. Here in Psalm 42.

One of the symptoms of spiritual dehydration is prolonged absence from assembling in the house of the Lord. Another symptom of spiritual dehydration is not spending time with God in personal communion. It leads to isolation and vulnerability to the temptations of the flesh. What about the spiritual dehydration of believers? Is that a choking sound I hear? How long has it been since you and God met for a visit? Reflect as you enjoy our hymn for the week.

Ho! Everyone Who Is Thirsty

Ho! Everyone that is thirsty in spirit,
Ho! Everyone that is weary and sad;
Come to the fountain, there’s fullness in Jesus,
All that you’re longing for; come and be glad!

Refrain: I will pour water on him that is thirsty,
I will pour floods upon the dry ground;
Open your hearts for the gifts I am bringing;
While you are seeking Me, I will be found.

Child of the world, are you tired of your bondage?
Weary of earth’s joys, so false, so untrue?
Thirsting for God and His fullness of blessing?
List’ to the promise, a message for you!

Refrain: I will pour water on him that is thirsty,
I will pour floods upon the dry ground;
Open your hearts for the gifts I am bringing;
While you are seeking Me, I will be found.

Child of the kingdom, be filled with the Spirit!
Nothing but “fullness” thy longing can meet;
‘Tis the enduement for life and for service;
Thine is the promise, so certain, so sweet.

Refrain: I will pour water on him that is thirsty,
I will pour floods upon the dry ground;
Open your hearts for the gifts I am bringing;
While you are seeking Me, I will be found.

AN OUTSTRETCHED NECK!

Psalm 75:4-5

To the arrogant I say, ‘Boast no more,’ and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horns.  Do not lift up your horns against heaven; do not speak with an outstretched neck.’

What an unusual phrase: “- – an outstretched neck.”  It is rendered that way in the New International Version of the Bible.  In the King James Version it is: “- – a stiff neck.”  In the New American Standard it is: “- – an insolent pride.” In the first two versions we have a word picture, while in the NASB we find more of a definition.

We often see insolent pride displayed during sporting events.  Not always, but frequently we observe athletes with outstretched necks parading back and forth like proud peacocks.  This behavior has become common enough that penalties are often assessed because it is described as taunting.

It is just as distressing to observe ministers of the Gospel strut and pose in displays of arrogance. These people claim to have the answer to any and all problems that others have. The solution, they pronounce, is to send your money to them and all will be well. (Sorry, I was a little carried away there.) These ministers are more disturbing to me than the athletes. Wisdom is in their own eyes. God will have the last word.

My plea is for us to bow before the Lord and confess that we deserve nothing, but He has given us His everything.  Our boasting is in Him and Him alone. He is my everything, and I bow before His majesty on high!

Let me close for today with this passage in Proverbs 3:5-6, which is the clearest way to steer clear of having an outstretched neck: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Blessings, Dear Hearts, draw near to God today, trust Him completely, and be a blessing!

CLOSER TO THEE!

Psalm 23:4

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Watch Video

Sometimes we just seem to find ourselves wandering down the wrong path, or at least getting out of touch with the Lord. When we ask ourselves why God is not closer to us, the answer is that He has not left us, we have moved away from Him. Can I let you in on a little secret? God is more interested in staying close to us than we are in allowing Him to remain near us.

In our Scripture for today, David gives us assurance that even when we pass through the valley of the shadow of death we need not be paralyzed with fear because the Lord is near us.

The words of Just A Closer Walk With Thee, should be our prayer request for the Lord to forgive us when we fail and allow us to be nearer to Him than ever before. It is my fervent desire to draw nearer and nearer to the Lord with each passing day.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee

I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;

I’ll be satisfied as long, as I walk,
let me walk close to Thee.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?

Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

When my feeble life is o’er,
time for me will be no more;

Guide me gently, safely o’er,
to Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

HIDING IN THEE!

Psalm 18:2

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Watch Video

Ira Sankey was a singer and song writer who ministered alongside evangelist D. L. Moody. He had experienced and extended time of trial and tears in his own personal life. He cried out to the Lord to be able to receive a renewing of his own spirit so he could in turn minister to others. It was during this time of agonizing prayer that the song Hiding In Thee was born. I am so thankful that the Lord heard and answered his prayer.

About twenty years later, Sergei Rachmaninoff was experiencing many problems in his life. He had a mental block, could not write and felt useless. After several years of emptiness he broke out of his doldrums and composed his second piano concerto. It is a joy to feature a blending of both works this week. ENJOY!

Hiding in Thee

O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine, would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its power,
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

FAKE IT!

Psalm 101:6-7

My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with Me; the one whose walk is blameless will minister to Me. No one who practices deceit will dwell in My house; no one who speaks falsely will stand in My presence.

A few days ago I mentioned that my boyhood friend, Jerry Williamson, had died. It was a blow because we had been neighbors since we were in diapers. If you are like me, it is easy to recall some of the humorous instances that makes someone like Jerry special.

One of the bizarre memories was when we were playing high school football. I was center and Jerry was quarterback. We concocted a special play but did not mention anything to the coach. Only the starting team members were aware of it. We simply called the play “Fake It.” It was designed to throw the other team into confusion if and when they seemed to have the momentum.

Here is how the play developed: I centered the ball, but held onto it. Jerry spun around and feigned as if he had given it to one of the running backs. Everyone raced after the back they assumed had the ball. In the meantime Jerry casually walked up and took the ball from me and sprinted down the sideline. It usually resulted in a touchdown. If the defense had focused on the football, they could have stopped the play. Instead they went where they thought it was. It was a fake!

There are many spiritual fakes around us. The moment we take our eyes off of the inerrant Word of God, rather than finding true faith, we are susceptible to fake religion. I do not want fake religion; I want God-given faith.

Blessings, Dear Hearts, draw near to God today, trust Him completely, and be a blessing!
