OBSERVE!

Psalm 119:34

“Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible. Each section is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. I am told that Jewish youth had to memorize the entire chapter — with 176 verses, that was no easy task. The Psalmist pens this Psalm in the form of a prayer beseeching the Lord to be our teacher.

It is interesting to dig a little deeper into the meaning of the word OBSERVE. In the Hebrew it means to keep, guard, keep watch and ward, protect. That gives us a much clearer meaning of what the writer is seeking from the Lord.

When I was a boy, or even a grown man in graduate school, I was required to apply myself to gaining knowledge. I fear that I fell short many times, but as I entered each classroom I was exposing myself to the things my instructor would teach me.

As we read this Psalm of prayer it is well and good to make it our own prayer. Our part is to listen to the Lord as He teaches and then to keep, guard, keep watch and ward, protect with our whole heart.

WALK TALK!

Psalm 19:14

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

Last week I was listening to a Christian radio station and heard a gospel quartet give a fantastic rendition of a song that had the words “WALK TALK” and “TALK TALK”  in the lyrics. I am sad to say I have not been able to locate the song on the media, so I will just have to explain the concept.

The essence of the song’s message is that we have a “talk talk” that is all words that fail to match the walk we have with the Lord. I am sure you can think of individuals who say one thing and do just the opposite.

Thank the Lord there are other saints of God who live their talk. They claim the promises of the Lord as found in the Bible and put them into action. Their “walk talk” can be relied upon.

It is well to look deep within our personal life. Do we say one thing and do another? Are we a living example of a sold-out Believer that is willing to pay the price in order to be one who always WALKS OUR TALK?

A CLOSER WALK!

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”

Watch Video

Someone has observed that shadows are often larger than the real object. When I was a police officer there were a few times when I was scared out of my wits by a huge shadow…only to discover it was a small cat walking in front of the headlights of my patrol car.

Death often casts a huge shadow, but it should hold no fear for the child of God. In 2 Corinthians 5:8 the Apostle Paul reminds us that “We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.” Death is our doorway into eternity. How fantastic!

As we consider the words of this song we should make it our prayer request. It should be our desire to walk closer to the Lord than ever before. It should not be just one time, but it should be our fervent desire to walk closer to Him with each passing day.

Just a Closer Walk With Thee

I am weak, but Thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;

I’ll be satisfied as long, as I walk,
let me walk close to Thee.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?

Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but Thee.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

When my feeble life is o’er,
time for me will be no more;

Guide me gently, safely o’er,
to Thy kingdom shore, to Thy shore.

Refrain: Just a closer walk with Thee,
grant it Jesus, is my plea,

Daily walking close to Thee,
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

I’VE HEARD IT ALL BEFORE!

Psalm 135:17

“They have ears, but they do not hear; nor is there any breath in their mouths.”

I recall a certain man who accompanied his wife to visit our congregation one Sunday morning. After the service he commented to me that he had read the entire Bible and knew everything it contained.

His brash statement stunned me so that I hardly knew how to respond. What I did say to him was that I had read the Bible many times, and the more I read it the more I feel the need to read it again to gain deeper understanding.

That encounter occurred many years ago and I am still finding new and exciting things every time I read the living Word of God. I am sure that much of the newness is due to the situations of life that I am experiencing at the time; but I am equally sure that the Lord desires to reveal exciting and relevant passages to prepare me for greater service.

I pray that I will never come to the place in my life when I feel that I know all there is to know about God’s Word. I desire to live my entire life as a student who sits at the feet of the Master, eager to learn more.

TRUE GRIT!

Psalm 19:14

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer.”

Last week I mentioned a poem I had read years ago in Grit Magazine. My dear friend Cathy also remembered reading Grit. She checked out Wikipedia to see if it was still in print. She found that it was and also discovered the original editorial policy.

“Always keep Grit from being pessimistic. Avoid printing those things which distort the minds of readers or make them feel at odds with the world. Avoid showing the wrong side of things, or making people feel discontented. Do nothing that will encourage fear, worry, or temptation… Wherever possible, suggest peace and good will toward men. Give our readers courage and strength for their daily tasks. Put happy thoughts, cheer, and contentment into their hearts.”

In a world that is increasingly pessimistic and perverted we need to be committed to showing the right attitude and action in everything we do and say. We need for others see Jesus in us without a word being spoken.

It is time for us to take a careful look at our self in the mirror of God’s Word. It is not in comparing ourselves with others that matters, but in comparing our thoughts and actions in such a way that would please Jesus.

HIDING IN THEE!

Psalm 18:2

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”

Watch Video

We are told that the persecution of believers around the world is increasing. Many are tortured for their faith and some killed. It has been estimated that there are over 100,000 deaths each year at the hands of the enemies of the cross.

Ira Sankey was a singer and song writer who ministered alongside evangelist D. L. Moody. He had experienced an extended time of trial and tears in his own personal life. It was during this time of agonizing prayer that the song Hiding In Thee was born. I am so thankful that the Lord heard and answered his prayer. It has ministered to many people across the years.

About twenty years after Sankey wrote his beautiful piece, Sergei Rachmaninoff was experiencing many problems in his life. He had a mental block, could not write, and felt useless. After several years of emptiness he broke out of his doldrums and composed his Second Piano Concerto. It is a joy to feature a blending of both works this week. ENJOY!

Hiding in Thee

O safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly;
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine, would I be;
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

In the calm of the noontide, in sorrow’s lone hour,
In times when temptation casts o’er me its power,
In the tempests of life, on its wide, heaving sea,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.

How oft in the conflict, when pressed by the foe,
I have fled to my refuge and breathed out my woe;
How often, when trials like sea billows roll,
Have I hidden in Thee, O Thou Rock of my soul.

Hiding in Thee, hiding in Thee,
Thou blest “Rock of Ages,” I’m hiding in Thee.
