Luke 22:31-32
“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
Experiencing the crippling effect of our recent snow and ice storm has been very revealing. Some have ranted and raved at the hard working electrical crews who have been laboring 24 hours a day to restore power. At the same time I have heard from others who have used this time to draw closer to the Lord and to each other.
A few people have asked me if I thought God was punishing us for the terrible sins that are so prevalent. Only God knows the answer to that question, and it is clear in scripture that there have been natural disasters to chastise people for their godless lifestyle. That being said, many other periods of sin and rebellion have not been dealt with in this manner.
What can we learn when bad things happen to good people? I feel that we have a glimpse in today’s Scripture. Peter was a fervent disciple of Jesus and felt that he would face death rather than deny his Lord. Jesus tenderly shared with Peter that Satan had asked permission to sift him. Why? Jesus said it was so his faith would be increased in order to strengthen his brothers. He did go through the time of testing and victoriously became the leader of that band of believers who saw 3,000 accept Jesus in a single day.
Are you experiencing the pressures of life? These ordeals may bring you to a greater level of service than you can imagine. Rather than question why you are being sifted, draw closer to the Lord and allow Him to deal with Satan.
Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, even in times of sifting, and allow Him to make you a blessing to others!

Luke 15:19-20
“I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants. So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”
One of my most pleasurable jobs as a pastor is helping families restore broken relationships. I once was called upon to officiate at a funeral service. The son of the deceased told me that he had not spoken to his sister for years and wanted me to reconcile them before the service. Yah!
Less than an hour before the service I met with the two and their families. Each of them had ten or fifteen children, spouses and others on their side. He and his family were on one side and she and her family on the other side of the aisle. I had prayed for just the right words and to this day cannot recall what Scripture I used. I had just finished when the brother stood and walked across the aisle and hugged his sister. The two families merged with great joy.
Fanny J. Crosby lived from 1820 to 1915. This remarkable lady never let problems keep her away from the Lord. Her blindness as an infant meant that she spent her entire life without physical sight, but was blessed with a keen spiritual sight.
When she was only eight she wrote the following poem: Oh, what a happy child I am, although I cannot see! I am resolved that in this world contented I will be! How many blessings I enjoy that other people don’t! So weep or sigh because I am blind, I cannot – nor I won’t. The hymn, Draw Me Nearer seems to express her desire toward her blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Draw Me Nearer
I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.
There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
Refrain:
Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

Luke 24:29
“But they constrained Him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And He went in to tarry with them”
Henry F. Lyte was a man who greatly loved the Lord with his whole being. He came up with the saying, “It is better to wear out than to rust out,” and it perfectly described his life.
During the last 23 years of his life he pastored a poor church in England. He always suffered from poor health but during this time his health started to decline even more. When he finally preached his last sermon on September 4, 1847, it is reported that he practically had to crawl to the pulpit.
Shortly before preaching his last sermon he wrote the words and tune to the hymn, Abide With Me. He based his hymn on today’s Scripture that tells the story of Jesus walking with two disciples on the way to Emmaus and their statement, “Abide with us: for it is toward evening and the day is far spent.” He went to be with the Lord shortly after writing the hymn.
Later William Monk wrote a new tune for the hymn. During a time of personal sorrow, he was inspired by the beauty of a magnificent sunset.
Abide With Me
Abide with me—fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens—Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me!
Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me!
I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.
Hold Thou Thy word before my closing eyes,
Shine thru the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heaven’s morning breaks and earth’s vain shadows flee
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me!

Luke 2:2-10
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.'”
Several years ago our church had finished a wonderful Christmas Eve service. Earlier there had been candles placed inside white lunch bags that lined the driveway leading to the church.
Joyce and I had volunteered to extinguish the candles after everyone had left. It had snowed a few days earlier and there were still a few inches on the ground. The temperature was about twenty degrees (F) when we crunched through the snow to the far end. It was so quiet and beautiful that we were moved in our spirit with the beauty of God’s creation and the carol Silent Night.
The words of this well loved carol were written in 1818 by Josef Mohr after he had seen a play about the birth of Jesus. He was in a reflective mood and walked to a hill overlooking his village in the Austrian Alps. The view of the snow covered village reminded him of a poem he had written a few years earlier. The poem was about the night the angel announced the birth of Jesus.
The next day he took the words of his poem to Franz Gruber, who had just composed a melody. He re-worked the melody to match the words to the poem Mohr written. Our beloved carol, Silent Night was born.
Silent Night
Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born
Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

Luke 15:20
So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.
Jesus presented spiritual truth with practical and everyday parables- – – stories. I am sure it irked the religious elite who loved to speak with high and flowery words that made them feel sophisticated and proud. If I ever tried that I would smile and have chives on my teeth or some other embarrassing human foible.
One of my life-long favorite parables is the Parable of the Lost Son or, as we commonly call it, the Parable of the Prodigal Son. Jesus relates the story of a son who has gone astray and hit the bottom. The wayward son determined to return home and become a servant in his father’s house, which would be far better than his miserable life in the far country.
The son expected to beg his father for employment. He had his speech all prepared and was willing to do anything to earn his board and room. What the son didn’t realize was that his father was expecting him—he had watched that road for a long, long time. When the father saw the form of his son, he ran to meet and greet him. He did not even listen to the son’s well rehearsed plea. He was immediately restored as part of the family once more.
You may feel somewhat like that lost son. You have gone to life’s pits. You never expected to be so low and are just sure that the Lord will never welcome you back. Can I let you in on a little secret? Actually, it’s a gigantic reality. God is eagerly expecting you and longing for you to return to Him. WELCOME HOME!

Luke 12:6-7
“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Sunday was our monthly potluck dinner. As we were visiting with other tables the subject of baldness came up. I remember when I first felt cold rain fall on my scalp. It really shocked me since my hair had been thick enough that I had not felt the cold drops before. Oh, the joys of getting older!
We see and hear advertisements for hair replacements that make it seem that with a full head of hair all of our problems will be over and we will be the most popular kid on the block (in a manner of speaking).
A preoccupation with our appearance can keep us from understanding the wonderful plan God has for our life. It is the Jesus inside of us that should shine through. It does not matter if we have lots of hair or none at all . . . we must walk so close to the Master that people will see only Him.
I love today’s Scripture for many reasons. One of the things that stands out for me is the encouragement to not be afraid. Our fear of what people will think of us can and does tarnish our witness. People are not interested in us looking perfect. They want to see reality! Let’s forget our hair and walk as Jesus wants us to walk.
