PLANTED BY THE STREAM​!

Psalm 1:3 – Devotional

Psalm 1:3

“He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.”

Blessed is the one who does not walk
In counsel of the proud,
Does not stand where sinners stand,
Nor sit where mockers crowd.
Their joy is in the law of God,
His truth both day and night,
Meditating on His Word,
Delighting in His light.

Rooted deep, not drifting wide,
Anchored by what’s true—

They’re a tree beside the waters,
Planted by the stream,
Bearing fruit in every season,
Living out God’s dream.
Their leaf will never wither,
All they do endures—
Blessed is the one who walks with God,
Standing firm, secure.

The ungodly are not rooted so,
They’re chaff the wind will drive,
Scattered when the storm winds blow,
They cannot stand alive.
They won’t endure the judgment day,
Nor in the righteous stand,
Their path dissolves like drifting dust,
Unheld by God’s own hand.

They’re a tree beside the waters,

2 Chronicles 32:7-8a

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

Many years ago I was listening to a pastor being interviewed on the radio. He was commenting about a man who had been in one of his exhaustive studies in the book of Revelation. The pastor asked if anyone in the class could sum up what the book of Revelation meant to them. An older gentleman stood and quietly stated, “Jesus wins!”

As we look around our world, we sometimes feel as though we are on the losing side. That is absolutely untrue! We have victory in Jesus! Let me be quick to point out that our victory is not because of our strength or our mental superiority. Our victory comes through the Lord Jesus Christ!

In today’s Scripture, King Hezekiah of Judah was faced with an enemy that seemed unbeatable. Surrounded by an army that had crushed other nations, he was ordered to surrender. But God told Hezekiah to stand fast. You may recall that Hezekiah took the letter that the Assyrian king had sent ridiculing the Lord into the Temple and laid before the God of Israel. The battle was not Hezekiah’s but God’s! In one night 185,000 enemy soldiers were cut down and the siege against Jerusalem was over. Never feel that we are on the losing side. Just remember the comment that that older gentleman made: “Jesus wins!”

Psalm 53:2 – Devotional

Psalm 53:2

“- – the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open to hear their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

One of my grade school teachers seemed to have eyes in the back of her head. Not that I was a problem of course, (cough, cough), but every time I did something I was not suppose to do (that was frequently), she saw me. I lived in constant fear of her!

Unfortunately, we tend to have that same attitude toward God. We picture Him as always watching out of the portals of heaven in order to catch us when we do something that is wrong. That is an incorrect understanding of God.

In today’s scripture we see that God is always watching. It is not so much that He is trying to catch us in our sin, but rather He desires to discover those who have a spiritual understanding of God and who are actively seeking to find Him in all of His glory.

When God watches you does He see a person who is actively seeking to do His will or their own will? It should be our heart’s desire to understand more about the nature of God each day. The Father gives us the Word – the Son gives us the Way – the Spirit gives us the Witness. We only have to become aware!

John 21:9 – Devotional

John 21:9

“Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread.“

Have you ever experienced a meal so delectable that years later the memory still makes your mouth water? There was once a restaurant in north Idaho that was mine and Joyce’s favorite. Their specialty was baked potatoes. It was heartbreaking to drive by our favorite eatery on a trip north only to discover the building had been destroyed by fire. No more of those wonderful baked potatoes for us.

Today’s scripture has often made me wonder what that seashore breakfast must have tasted like to the disciples who had been invited to come and dine. Think about it! The Master who had created the universe had Himself prepared fish and bread. I am sure that they had never wrapped their lips around anything so delicious.

The Master invites each and every one of us to gather around His table and partake of the food He prepares for us. His food nourishes and sustains us to do His will for our lives.

If you are trying to survive on the scraps of this world, I want to invite you to move up to the Lord’s table and enjoy the meal He has prepared for His disciples. It will do more than sustain you — it will equip you for His service.

PREREQUISITES!

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Devotional

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.“

In college there are prerequisite courses required before you are able to enroll in a particular course. In much the same way, God places certain prerequisites in our life’s journey serving Him.

In today’s passage we are told not to lean on our own understanding. We all too often discover that people far too often place too much emphasis on what they know. It is called pride! God hates pride and we need to deal with it.

God gives us two do’s: First, we are to trust in the Lord with all of our heart. That means everything. Second, we are to acknowledge Him in all of our ways. Stop taking the credit that rightfully belongs to the Lord.

The precious promise that God gives us in this passage is that He will direct our paths. That, to me, is better than any Global Positioning System (GPS) that man has ever developed.

Where do you find yourself in the process of meeting God’s conditional promises? I trust that you will learn along with me that God is better able to lead, guide, and direct than we will ever be.
