SLEEP MASKS AND EAR PLUGS!

2 Chronicles 7:14-15 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 7:14-15

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.”

I recently received an email advertisement for sleep masks and earplugs. It sounded intriguing especially if you are working night shift. Back in my college days when we had three kids and I was working full-time from 11 o’clock in the evening till 7 o’clock in the morning. Try as she might, Joyce could not always keep the kids silent. A sleep mask and ear plugs might have helped, but it was not to be.

I am sure you realize that there is a strong spiritual application. The majority of people go through life with sleep masks and earplugs to block out anything that has spiritual significance.

The sleep masks and earplugs may often be identified by activities, studies, infatuations, alcohol, drugs, and on and on the list may go. If you have ever spent any amount of time in the company of unsaved people you will hear them mock anything that has to do with eternal values. They often make statements to indicate that they live a good life and that should qualify them for heaven.

According to Scripture we know that is not the case. When we try to tell them they are deaf and blind. But never give up! There may be a brief moment when they are open to hear and believe. Our job is to be ready when they’re open to hear and see.

GOD CARES!

Psalm 53:2 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 32:7-8a

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”

Many years ago I was listening to a pastor being interviewed on the radio. He was commenting about a man who had been in one of his exhaustive studies in the book of Revelation. The pastor asked if anyone in the class could sum up what the book of Revelation meant to them. An older gentleman stood and quietly stated, “Jesus wins!”

As we look around our world, we sometimes feel as though we are on the losing side. That is absolutely untrue! We have victory in Jesus! Let me be quick to point out that our victory is not because of our strength or our mental superiority. Our victory comes through the Lord Jesus Christ!

In today’s Scripture, King Hezekiah of Judah was faced with an enemy that seemed unbeatable. Surrounded by an army that had crushed other nations, he was ordered to surrender. But God told Hezekiah to stand fast. You may recall that Hezekiah took the letter that the Assyrian king had sent ridiculing the Lord into the Temple and laid before the God of Israel. The battle was not Hezekiah’s but God’s! In one night 185,000 enemy soldiers were cut down and the siege against Jerusalem was over. Never feel that we are on the losing side. Just remember the comment that that older gentleman made: “Jesus wins!”

A CLEAN HEART!

2 Chronicles 26:4-5 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 26:4-5

“He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had done. He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the Lord, God gave him success.“

There is no way we can ever place conditions on God. I think most of us have heard of foxhole conversions where someone in grave danger cries out to God, promises to serve Him and become His child . . . if only He will save them from the terrible situation they find themselves in. That’s not the way it works! We are to come to God unconditionally!

It works just the opposite with God. As the Master of the Universe, God is free to place conditions on us. He has promised to bless us, but only when we follow after Him and do the things that He calls us to do. He delights in showering the bounty of heaven upon us when we trust and obey.

There is no way that God finds pleasure in causing us difficulty of any type. In fact it’s just the opposite. God wants us to prosper spiritually and emotionally. It is heartbreaking to observe people who once enjoyed God’s blessing turn their backs on God thinking they can find pleasure in the things of the world. The things of the world are going to pass away, but the things of God will last for eternity.

Here’s the challenge! Are we living our lives to please God? Do we find the highest pleasure in spending time with Him in prayer and reading His precious word? My prayer is that we will seek to find what is right in the eyes of the Lord and then make that our highest priority.

THE DOWNFALL OF PRIDE!

2 Chronicles 26:16 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 26:16

“But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the Lord his God, and went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.”

Many characters in the Bible started out as God’s heroes, but they ended up as zeroes because of their pride. Unfortunately, Uzziah was one of those.

As long as he sought the Lord, Uzziah was able to subdue his enemies and be God’s man to lead Judah in subduing her enemies. Somewhere along the line he began to think that it was his own ability that brought victory. That is always the beginning of the end for anyone.

Uzziah did not become full of pride until he had become powerful. His success caused him to take his eyes off the Lord and become proud of himself. Sadly, we will never know all that Uzziah could have accomplished if he had remained dependent upon the Lord. We do know that he blew it!

So what was Uzziah’s sin? He presumed on God’s holiness. What does that mean? It means that he felt that he was above God’s Word and that he was exempt from what it demanded. Doing things his way, not God’s way, doomed him to a life of leprosy, humiliation, and separation—FROM PRIDE TO PITY.

2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Johnny and his younger sister, Judy, had been outside playing when Judy rushed into the house crying. Judy told her mother that Johnny had hit her. Their mother asked Johnny why he had hit his sister. He replied: “I didn’t hit her—she just ran into my fist!”

It is always easier to blame someone else for our sins and transgressions than to confess them ourselves. This is especially true as we look at our sin-sick world. We cluck our tongues and pray for God to change our rotten society.

I certainly do not mean to imply that we are to accept what is going on in our world, but how does God expect us to respond? I think the answer is that we need to look into the mirror of God’s Word.

In today’s Scripture, God is speaking to His people. That means those of us who are born-again believers. So what does this passage say to us? 1. Humble ourselves. 2. Pray. 3. Seek God’s face. 4. Turn from our wicked ways.

Before we can ever hope to change our world, we have to examine ourselves and discover areas of sin and compromise that lurk deep within. We can never hope to see our world change until we are willing to experience a change in our own life. Are you willing to change?

REVIVE US LORD!

2 Chronicles 7:13-14 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 7:13-14

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

When I was a boy we would typically have a revival service in our church twice a year. A traveling evangelist would come and conduct the meetings every night for two weeks. Now in the day of labor saving devices we just do not seem to have the time and energy for extra meetings. Could it be our misplaced priorities?

Churches have encountered problems and families have been fractured because of the sin of pride. It often seems that there is a gigantic contest between churches to see which one is the best.

People hop from one congregation to another on a whim. Instead of searching the Scriptures to discover the will of God for their lives in Christ Jesus, they seek some new pew to park themselves while trying to feel satiated.

God’s plan for revival is for His people who are called by His name (myself included) to get on our faces and humbly confess our need for a refreshing encounter with the God who created everything. Lord we need You now more than ever before. Come and bring refreshing renewal!
