O DAY FULL OF GRACE!

Acts 2:36-39 – Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

Acts 2:36-39

“‘Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.’ When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.'”

This week’s hymn, O Day Full of Grace, a Scandinavian hymn was written for Pentecost. If you are unfamiliar with it you’ll enjoy reading thru the lyrics provided below.

. . . . . . . .

O DAY FULL OF GRACE

Oh day full of grace that now we see
Appearing on earth’s horizon,
Bring light from our God that we may be
Replete in his joy this season.
God, shine for us now in this dark place;
Your name on our hearts emblazon.

O day full of grace, O blessed time,
our Lord on the earth arriving;
then came to the world that light sublime,
great joy for us all retrieving;
for Jesus all mortals did embrace,
all shame and despair removing.

For Christ bore our sins, and not his own,
When he on the cross was hanging;
And then he arose and moved the stone,
That we, unto him belonging,
Might join with angelic hosts to raise
Our voices in endless singing.

God came to us then at Pentecost,
His Spirit new life revealing,
That we might no more from Him be lost,
All darkness for us dispelling.
His flame will the mark of sin efface
And bring to us all His healing.

When we on that final journey go
That Christ is for us preparing,
We’ll gather in song, our hearts aglow,
All joy of the heavens sharing,
And there will join God’s endless praise,
with angels and saints adoring.

REACH THE PRODIGALS! – Luke 15:13 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

REACH THE PRODIGALS!

Luke 15:13 – Devotional

Luke 15:13

“Not many days after, the younger son gathered his belongings and traveled to a far country where he wasted everything in prodigal living.

We are not told where the far country was to which the young son journeyed. I have known prodigals whose far country was the nearest bar. I have also encountered prodigals who have traveled thousands of miles away from those who love them.

It is interesting that the definition of the word prodigal defines one who spends money in a reckless and extravagant manner. Wow! That would describe many in our modern world who have never even traveled away from home!

It is interesting to note that after the young son had frittered away all of his money a famine struck the land. I am sure he did not see that coming. As he tried to seek help from his new friends, he found that they were just as destitute as he was. Famine is no respecter of persons.

As a last resort this Jewish boy was forced to find employment feeding pigs. How low can he fall?! In fact it seems his wages were being able to eat the same food he was feeding the swine around him. That describes many prodigals in our modern world doesn’t it? We need to offer spiritual help to these needy souls.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

THE WINNING SIDE! – 1 Corinthians 15:57 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

THE WINNING SIDE!

1 Corinthians 15:57 – Devotional

1 Corinthians 15:57

“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

People like to be on the winning side. I have yet to hear anyone cheer when their team is losing. For those applying for a certain job, it is a cause for celebration when they win the position over the other applicants.

In this old sin-sick world it may feel like we believers are on the losing side. The forces of evil seem to become stronger and more violent with each passing day. It may even appear that God is not concerned when we encounter suffering and loss.

When we read today’s Scripture, however, we discover that we are on the winning side. It is not because of what we do, but what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us. It may be compared with relaxing in the stands while your team struggles on the field. When your team wins you stand and cheer, “WE WON!” You may have done nothing more strenuous than eat a bag of popcorn, but you share in the team’s victory.

As believers we have been assured of victory. It is not because of anything else we have done to merit the victory other than trusting in Jesus for salvation. Victory!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GOOD ENOUGH! – Galatians 3:2-3 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

GOOD ENOUGH!

Galatians 3:2-3 – Devotional

Galatians 3:2-3

“This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?

I remember working with my dad building houses. Sometimes when we were fitting pieces of framing together, the ends might be a fraction of an inch off. I would hear my dad say, “Good enough.” I fear that many people are prone to apply that same attitude to their spiritual lives.

Just what is good enough in the spiritual realm? The answer is perfection. The second question is whose perfection? It is certainly not ours. I have known thousands of people in my life and not one of them was or is perfect. There are some who seem to believe that they are perfect, but just spend time with them … you will see the truth!

My dear friend Mike Keller works in prison ministry in Florida. He always asks his group this question: Do you think you can be good enough to make it to heaven? Most inmates raise their hands to answer “Yes.” Then Mike tells them that it is not possible to be good enough and goes on to explain the plan of salvation to them.

It is not our perfection that we need, but the perfection of Christ. He paid it all in our behalf. We can never be good enough in ourselves, but Jesus was good enough for all of us. We need His goodness to provide us with salvation.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

I WANT PATIENCE – RIGHT NOW! – James 5:8 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

I WANT PATIENCE – RIGHT NOW!

James 5:8 – Devotional

James 5:8

“You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

We are living in such an “instant” age that the mere mention of patience flies in the face of our way of life. We have instant cash machines, instant check-out counters, instant income tax refunds, instant coffee … tea … pudding … mashed potatoes … (I was going to continue, but the mere mention of instant mashed potatoes made me sick to my stomach).

In the face of all the short-cuts to achieve our end result, we find that we have even less time for the important things in life than ever before. Not only that, the labor-saving devices we use find us so tired and exhausted at the end of the day that we walk and talk like robots. Our “time-saving” gadgets and gizmos have us running at a break-neck pace to get from appointment to appointment. What has happened?

The answer lies in the Word of God. In all of our efforts we have totally failed to develop the proper discipline of patience. We do not want to wait or slow down for anything. In the midst of our hectic, fast-paced schedules we are so busy making things happen that we leave no room for that all important “quiet time” of waiting to see what God is going to bring into being. Slow down and wait for God!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions and your patience!!
