CHANGE ME LORD! – Psalm 51:10 Devotional

CHANGE ME LORD!

Psalm 51:10 – Devotional

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Many times I need to remind myself that my attitude is showing. It is at these moments when Psalm 51:10 seems an appropriate prayer to breathe.

It is not an easy process for us to change our attitude. We may know what the Bible says about living a Christ-like life, but it is not so easy to put it into practice. There always seems to be too much of us and too little of Christ in us.

How do we move from knowing about a Christ-like life and putting it into practice? I think the answer is to be found in today’s Scripture. It is not what we do, but what Christ has done for us. Too many times we struggle and strain in trying to be good enough to change. It does not work!

We need to acknowledge that we are incapable of making the change in ourselves and yield our selfish will to His divine will. Jesus paid the price for our salvation and He also has sent the Holy Spirit to do what we can never do.

The next time we see our self-centered attitude rising, let us commit ourselves to admitting that it is only by the Lord’s help we can change.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

PRAISE THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY! – Jeremiah 29:11-13 Devotional

PRAISE THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY!

Jeremiah 29:11-13 – Devotional

Jeremiah 29:11-13

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I would dare to say that almost all of us have experienced some sort of trial in our life. It could be the loss of health, a financial meltdown, death of a mate or child or any number of catastrophic events. It is not whether or not we will encounter these trials, but rather what we will do when they arise.

The phrase, Praise to the Lord occurs in at least 155 verses in the Bible. That indicates to me that we need to spend far more time praising the Lord than we do. It would be well to replace our complaints with words of praise to the Lord.

Over 300 years ago, Joachim Neander was a hymn writer for the German Reform church. He was going through a time of trial and testing in his life. He would take long walks and pour his heart out to the Lord. It was on one of these walks that he came to the realization that it was not his strength that would give him victory and peace, but rather the powerful God he served. It was in that state of mind that he composed this week’s featured hymn.

PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, Now to His temple draw near;
Join me in glad adoration!

Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

Praise to the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee!
Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed Thee.
How oft in grief hath not He bought thee relief,
Spreading His wings for to shade thee!

Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

NEAR THE CROSS! – 1 Peter 4:12-13 Devotional

NEAR THE CROSS!

1 Peter 4:12-13 – Devotional

1 Peter 4:12-13

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.”

Fanny J. Crosby was a remarkable woman. There are so many accomplishments in her life that it is hard to comprehend them all. She lost her eyesight because of the treatment of a careless doctor. In spite of her loss she memorized huge portions of Scripture just by listening to her grandmother read them to her. She is credited with writing over 10,000 hymns during her life.

Fanny began writing poetry at an early age, but another amazing fact is that she did not accept Jesus as her personal Savior until she was 31. She was attending a service on November 20, 1850. The congregation was singing a hymn by Isaac Watts; At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light. She knew she needed the Lord and that very night He became her Savior and Lord. Her desire was to always stay close to Jesus who had paid the ultimate price for her salvation. Her desire was to remain near her Lord. She immediately wrote the words to the hymn for this week.

Near the Cross

Jesus, keep me near the cross; there a precious fountain,
free to all, a healing stream, flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, love and mercy found me;
there the bright and morning star sheds its beams around me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God, bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day with its shadow o’er me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross I will watch and wait, hoping, trusting ever,
till I reach the golden strand just beyond the river.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

THE SANDS OF ETERNITY! – Ecclesiastes 3:11 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

THE SANDS OF ETERNITY!

Ecclesiastes 3:11 – Devotional

Ecclesiastes 3:11

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.”

Years ago I heard a minister tell of an incident in a hospital elevator where he had just come from visiting a very ill patient. A young man overheard him speak about eternity and, perhaps wanting to mock his view, asked the minister where eternity was. The minister told the boy to place his hand on his chest to feel the beat of his heart. “Young man, eternity is one heartbeat away!” That may answer where eternity is or at least how close we are to it, but just how long is eternity?

Our daughter was in the hospital near death. One afternoon as the two of us spoke quietly, she said she felt she was cheated out of half of her life. She went on to say that Grandpa was 74 when he died and here she was just 35.

That evening as I drove into the garage I noticed that the car had been bringing in sand. I took out a sheet of typing paper and swept up some of the sand. I then sat at the kitchen table and counted out 74 grains. Some were larger than others, but all of them were quite small. I placed the 74 grains of sand in a tiny sample perfume bottle.

The next day as I entered her room I placed the bottle on her bed. When she asked what it was I told her it was Grandpa. I asked her to imagine the earth being nothing but fine sand. Each grain represented one year of eternity. The 74 grains in the bottle represented Grandpa’s life. Compared to the entire globe of sand it was nothing. Whether a person’s life lasted long or short, compared to eternity it was nothing.

It is what we do with the years we are given that matters. We can choose to confess our sins and accept Jesus Christ as our personal Savior or we can continue our own willful way and suffer the dreadful consequences prepared for the lost.

CHOOSE TO REJOICE! – Psalm 118:24 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

CHOOSE TO REJOICE!

Psalm 118:24 – Devotional

Psalm 118:24

“This is the day the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

A new month is here and we are closer to eternity than we have ever been before! The question we should ask ourselves is; “How will I best use this day as a faithful servant of the Lord?” (Pause and pray that short prayer right now.)

There are believers who live their life looking as if they had been submerged in a vat of vinegar. That is a terrible witness for the Lord! Other believers who have experienced life-shattering experience glow with heavenly radiance.

What is the difference? I believe the difference is in our choice to rejoice instead of to complain. That’s right! We can choose to see the good in each and every situation. We all will pass through the dark valley, but God has assured us He will be right there beside us!

As you live the remaining days, weeks, months, and years of your life, I urge you to choose to rejoice in each situation your path through life leads you. It may be the high ground or the valley, but the Lord is beside you!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
