Deuteronomy 32:10-12
“In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The LORD alone led him; no foreign god was with him.”
The large number of feeders in our yard demonstrates the fact that Joyce and I love birds. It is such a joy to watch their antics as they live out their lives a few feet from our windows. One summer a mother Junco built her nest in one of our hanging baskets. We never noticed it until she flew out one day as we watered the plants. As we peered through the foliage we saw a clutch of three eggs.
From the moment we discovered the nest we became very cautious not to disturb her any more than possible. In just a few days we could part the leaves and observe her covering her eggs and later her chicks. They were safe under the wings of her love. She would have given her life for her own. In like manner we are under His wings!
In 1896, William Cushing was a kind hearted man. Following the death of his beloved wife he devoted himself to write hymns of encouragement and hope to those in the storms of life. He wrote the words and Ira Sankey composed the music to the hymn, Under His Wings, this week’s featured hymn from GloryScapes.
Under His wings, I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild.
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me and I am His child.Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are over;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I?m safe evermore.Refrain: Under His wings, under His wings,
who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
safely abide forever.
