Hebrews 3:12-15

“See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said: ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.'”

In the late 1800’s, revival swept across the Scandinavian countries. One of the great influences during this time of revival was Karolina Sandell. She had known much tragedy in her life, but did not allow it to destroy her faith.

Karolina was born in Sweden in 1832. Her father was a pastor whom she loved dearly. When she was twenty-six years of age, this devoted daughter accompanied him on a trip to Gothenburg. The ship lurched and Karolina watched in horror as her dear father drowned before her eyes.

In spite of her broken heart she began to write hymns that came directly from a heart that refused to be stilled by disaster. Her simple trust in a loving heavenly Father was felt in her hymns. One of these is this week’s hymn.

Day By Day

Day by day, and with each passing moment,
strength I find, to meet my trials here.
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure,
gives unto each day what He deems best—
lovingly, it’s part of pain and pleasure,
mingling toil with peace and rest.

Every day, the Lord Himself is near me
with a special mercy for each hour;
all my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He Whose Name is Counselor and Power;
the protection of His child and treasure
is a charge that on Himself He laid;
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
this the pledge to me He made.

Help me then in every tribulation,
so to trust Thy promises, O Lord.
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
offered me within Thy Holy Word.
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
ever to take, as from a father’s hand.
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
till I reach the promised land.
