Genesis 1:16b-18
God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
It hardly seems possible, but we have reached the time of the winter Solstice. In the north that means we have reached the shortest day of the year, while those of you in the southern hemisphere are now enjoying the longest day of the year.
I do not want to display my ignorance trying to explain how the earth has a slight wobble that creates the seasons. All I know is that God designed the world that way for a purpose. It gives us times of warmth and times of cold. Our life on earth depends upon the way God has designed the seasons.
God has created within each of us the desire to seek after Him. In the first chapter of Romans, the Apostle Paul writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, proves His existence by the way He has created our world.
Each of us must pass through those times of our life when we feel that it is the shortest day of our life. There is more dark than light. It is in these times that God speaks to us and urges us to hold on until His light shines through. It is in the long night of our lives that we need to take His hand and wait for the dawn.

Genesis 2:23-24
“The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called [woman,] for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”
Saturday I will be officiating at the wedding of a beautiful young woman and her handsome groom. I have been a pastor to her and her family for many years and it is hard to believe that she has become a mature woman.
This morning as I was showering after my early morning workout, I picked up the bar of soap. Actually it had once been two bars. I am extremely frugal and it just seems a waste to throw away an old bar, so I place them together and before long they have been fused into a single bar.
The soap bar illustration seems to be a perfect description of what a true and healthy marriage should be—the two becoming one. Many marriages are two people who remain two people for year after year. The reason they never become one is that they have not fused.
In the King James the word “cleave” is used. It is the Hebrew word “dabaq” and means: “To cling, stick, stay close, cleave, keep close, stick to, stick with, follow closely, join to, overtake, catch.” Oh that more married couples would seek to find that wonderful unity, not only in their relationship with each other, but much more in their relationship with the Lord. That is my prayer for Jamie and David.

Genesis 9:16
“Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
I can recall that Joyce and I were once driving along the beautiful Columbia River gorge in Oregon. A rain shower had recently swept across the area, and now bright sunlight flooded the area. As we drove, a rainbow kept pace beside the car. I know it was a refraction of the sunlight, but it was an awe inspiring sight.
Without rain there could be no rainbow. Without sun there would be no rainbow. God has graciously made a covenant with all creatures on the earth that there would never again be a flood such as there was in Noah’s day.
Back in 1879 Rev. J. K. Alwood was equally moved as he observed a rainbow in the western sky late one evening as he was traveling home. When he arrived at his home, he immediately composed the hymn for this week: The Unclouded Day.
The Unclouded Day
O they tell me of a home far beyond the skies,
O they tell me of a home far away;
O they tell me of a home where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
Chorus: O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an unclouded sky;
O they tell me of a home, Where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
O they tell me of a home where my friends have gone,
O they tell me of that land far away;
Where the tree of life in eternal bloom
Sheds its fragrance thru the unclouded day.
Chorus: O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an unclouded sky;
O they tell me of a home, Where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
O they tell me of the King in His beauty there,
And they tell me that mine eyes shall behold,
Where He sits on the throne that is whiter than snow,
In the city that is made of gold.
Chorus: O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an unclouded sky;
O they tell me of a home, Where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.
O they tell me that he smiles on His children there,
And his smile drives their sorrows all away;
And they tell me that no tears ever come again,
In that lovely land of unclouded day.
Chorus: O the land of cloudless day,
O the land of an unclouded sky;
O they tell me of a home, Where no storm clouds rise,
O they tell me of an unclouded day.

Genesis 2:23-24
“And Adam said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’ Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Frequently we take far too much credit for resolving conflicts than we ought. Here is a case in point. I once ministered as a Christian Counselor. Most of the people that came for counsel lived in the area and I was able to keep regular appointments.
One couple called from over 100 miles away and said their marriage was on the rocks, could they come and counsel with me. I agreed to meet with them but wondered what help I could give in just one session. I prayed for God to answer.
When the couple arrived at my office, they had a silly grin on their face. In the two hours they had spent driving to my office, they had a chance to talk about what had happened to them and what they needed to do to make their marriage work. They gave me their apologies, but they just didn’t need me now.
Wow! That is what I delight to hear. I told them that the next time they had any conflict in their relationship to just go out and drive around for two hours in order to resolve their issues.
Are you seeking harmony in your marriage? Get totally alone for a few hours and allow God to mend the broken relationship.

Genesis 1:27-28
“So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”
A few days ago I was stuck at a road construction site. As I sat there I enjoyed a time of prayer and meditating on a passage of Scripture. I then noticed the bumper sticker on the car in front of me. It read, “Earth is our mother! Treat her with respect!”
Since then I have been thinking of the error of the message this sticker was transmitting. Where in Scripture do we find the idea that the earth is our mother? Not in God’s Word. It comes from the false faith in evolution that we all evolved from some inorganic material and grew from the earth. Wow! That is far more faith than I have!
These same evolutionists have not found evidence that life started here, so it must have been from another planet that was struck by a meteorite and a piece was thrown into space and arrived here to start life. Right! Here’s another big question for these so called solid thinkers: Where did life on the other planet come from? Hmmmm?
Mother earth is not our mother! God is our Father and He created all things. He spoke and the world came into being and He gave mankind the task of overseeing what He created. We might have done a terrible job of it, but the idea of mother earth or mother nature is contrary to God’s Word. I choose to believe God!
