SAY NO!

1 Peter 3:11-12

Let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their prayers; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.

Years ago our family delighted in watching the Public Television presentation of a series called All Creatures Great and Small. It followed the exploits of a British country veterinarian in pre-World War II.

I recently purchased the books from which the television series was adapted. Once again I have been fascinated by life in a more simple time. There is one thing that has stood out in reading this semi-authentic history of an actual veterinarian at that time — the refusal to just say NO!

Time after time, the hero of the story, James Herriot, was persuaded to partake of copious amounts of liquor that he really did not wish to drink. The simple reason was that he did not know how to say NO! I find myself wanting to yell at him across the decades of time to learn the secret of walking away in these situations.

Having spent years in police work and the military, I certainly know what it feels like to be pressured into doing things my conscience warns against. I can honestly say that taking a stand to do the right thing has not only saved me heartache, it has been a witness to those around me (even some of those who were enticing me to go against my Christian values). I want to encourage each of us to say YES! to the Lord and NO! to Satan’s temptations.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

NEAR THE CROSS!

1 Peter 4:12-13

Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

Fanny J. Crosby was a remarkable woman. There are so many accomplishments in her life that it is hard to comprehend them all. She lost her eyesight because of the treatment of a careless doctor. In spite of her loss she memorized huge portions of Scripture just by listening to her grandmother read them to her. She is credited with writing over 10,000 hymns during her life.

Fanny began writing poetry at an early age, but another amazing fact is that she did not accept Jesus as her personal Savior until she was 31. She was attending a service on November 20, 1850. The congregation was singing a hymn by Isaac Watts; “At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light.” She knew she needed the Lord and that very night He became her Savior and Lord.

Her desire was to always stay close to Jesus who had paid the ultimate price for her salvation. Her desire was to remain near her Lord. She immediately wrote the words to this week’s hymn, Near the Cross.

Near the Cross

Jesus, keep me near the cross;
there a precious fountain,
free to all, a healing stream,
flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul,
love and mercy found me;
there the bright and morning star
sheds its beams around me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day
with its shadow o’er me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait,
hoping, trusting ever,
till I reach the golden strand
just beyond the river.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

DOES JESUS CARE?

1 Peter 5:6-7

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

There have been times in my life when I felt isolated and alone. It seemed that I was alone and could not sense the nearness of God in my life. When I experienced these times of spiritual drought, I was prone to wonder if Jesus really cared, even though I am usually happy and optimistic. It has been in these times that I have felt the enemy of my soul attack. I rush to God’s Word for comfort.

Frank E. Graeff was known as the “sunshine minister.” He had a cheery disposition, a winsome personality, spiritual optimist, and was a great friend of children. He was known to have a child-like faith. That being said, he did pass through times of deep trials. It was then that he turned to the Scriptures as his guide in the darkness.

As I read the words of this hymn that he wrote, I can see the change from gloom and despair to hope and victory. That is what I want in my life.

Does Jesus Care?

Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress
And the way grows weary and long?

Refrain: Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?

Refrain: Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed
To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief there is no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long?

Refrain: Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

Does Jesus care when I’ve said “goodbye”
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks,
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?

Refrain: Oh yes, He cares, I know He cares,
His heart is touched with my grief;
When the days are weary, the long nights dreary,
I know my Savior cares.

DANGER IS LURKING!

1 Peter 5:8-9

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

When I was a boy our family spent a wonderful vacation at Yellowstone National Park. The beauty was breathtaking and we were within walking distance of a lake that was teeming with trout. (At least my imagination told me it was teeming with trout.)

I grabbed my fishing rod and was heading toward the lake. Between myself and the lake was a stand of willow bushes. I was making my way through the thick bushes when I suddenly saw a cow moose and her baby. She was heading my direction with her hackles up and making warning snorts. I froze as she roared past me about 20 feet away.

I was so unnerved that I forgot about my great fishing expedition and headed back to the cabin. Since then I have discovered that a mother moose with a calf is a dangerous animal. Many people have been badly injured or even killed by this gigantic beast. A park ranger cautioned us  to stay in clear areas or where paths have been cleared.

In our spiritual journey, we may be tempted to wander into areas that are dangerous. Our enemy is always watching for those who stray from the straight and narrow path of God’s Word. We must always remember that danger is lurking when we compromise what God has given us as the way, the truth and the life.

Blessings, Dear Hearts, draw near to God today, trust Him completely, and be a blessing!

BE PATIENT!

1 Peter 3:15-16

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.

Yesterday I wrote on the necessity of being prepared. I tried to focus on the emergencies of life that we face at one time or another. Without a firm spiritual foundation that is based on the truth of God’s Word, we will find ourselves adrift in the sea of confusion.

There is another aspect of preparedness that I want to briefly touch upon today. I almost gave today’s E-Votional this title: “BE PREPARED TO BE QUIET!” Being of a kind nature, I decided against it. I hope you do not have the dreaded, “foot-in-mouth disease” like I do from time to time.

God has called us to be His witnesses and spread the gospel around the world, but we are told to be wise in the manner in which we share the message. Notice that this passage mentions that sharing must be done with “…gentleness and respect.”

To me, this gentleness and respect implies that we be sensitive to the open heart of the recipient. Not only that, we will be able to witness to the lost by the life we live as much, or even more than the words we speak. As the old railroad crossing signs said: STOP, LOOK AND LISTEN, before we share.

Blessings, Dear Hearts, draw near to God today, trust Him completely, and be a blessing!
