THIN ICE!

Psalm 37:4 – Devotional

Psalm 37:4

“Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.”

I was riding with a Deputy Sheriff in Canyon County, Idaho, when we received an emergency call for a car that had broken through the ice on a local lake.

When we responded to the scene we found the car broken through the thin ice and a teenage girl trapped in the front passenger seat. The icy water was almost up to her shoulders. Fortunately, the car was on the bottom and not in danger of submerging any further, but the girl was close to hypothermia.

There were three other teens standing around the car, but they were almost in a state of shock and were not able to help. Deputy Edwards immediately entered the water and after five or ten minutes was able to free her from the wreckage. Soon an ambulance arrived and the girl was saved – cold, but out of danger.

That particular day the car was driven by a young man who thought the ice was thick enough to support the weight of his car. He was wrong! He relied on his faulty judgment instead of the reality of the situation. Many people today are skating on the thin ice of human reasoning instead of the infallible Word of God. That, my dear friend, is relying on very THIN ICE indeed! Don’t risk eternity!

Blessings dear hearts! May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

PLANTED BY THE STREAM!

Psalm 1:3 – Devotional

Psalm 1:3

“He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper.”

This week we have a special new song for you created by Russ Hansen entitled, “Planted by the Stream.” He’d appreciate your feedback on this song–please send it to him at inspiration@thegoodbookcompany.com.

Planted by the Stream (inspired by Psalm 1)

[Verse 1]
Blessed is the one who does not walk
In counsel of the proud,
Does not stand where sinners stand,
Nor sit where mockers crowd.
Their joy is in the law of God,
His truth both day and night,
Meditating on His Word,
Delighting in His light.

[Pre-Chorus]
Rooted deep, not drifting wide,
Anchored by what’s true—

[Chorus]
They’re a tree beside the waters,
Planted by the stream,
Bearing fruit in every season,
Living out God’s dream.
Their leaf will never wither,
All they do endures—
Blessed is the one who walks with God,
Standing firm, secure.

[Verse 2]
The ungodly are not rooted so,
They’re chaff the wind will drive,
Scattered when the storm winds blow,
They cannot stand alive.
They won’t endure the judgment day,
Nor in the righteous stand,
Their path dissolves like drifting dust,
Unheld by God’s own hand.

[Chorus]
They’re a tree beside the waters,
Planted by the stream,
Bearing fruit in every season,
Living out God’s dream.
Their leaf will never wither,
All they do endures—
Blessed is the one who walks with God,
Standing firm, secure.

[Bridge]
The Lord, He knows the righteous way,
He watches every step,
But paths that turn from truth and life
Are roads that won’t be kept.
One road leads on to life and peace,
One fades and falls apart—
Choose the way the Lord has shown,
And guard it in your heart.

[Final Chorus]
Like a tree beside the waters,
Planted by the stream,
Rooted in the Word of God,
More than hope or dream.
The Lord preserves the righteous path,
His truth forever sure—
Blessed is the one who walks with God,
Standing firm, secure.

[Outro]
Blessed… blessed…
Planted by the stream.

Blessings dear hearts! May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GOD CARES!

Psalm 53:2 – Devotional

Psalm 53:2

“- – the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open to hear their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

One of my grade school teachers seemed to have eyes in the back of her head. Not that I was a problem of course, (cough, cough), but every time I did something I was not suppose to do (that was frequently), she saw me. I lived in constant fear of her!

Unfortunately, we tend to have that same attitude toward God. We picture Him as always watching out of the portals of heaven in order to catch us when we do something that is wrong. That is an incorrect understanding of God.

In today’s scripture we see that God is always watching. It is not so much that He is trying to catch us in our sin, but rather He desires to discover those who have a spiritual understanding of God and who are actively seeking to find Him in all of His glory.

When God watches you does He see a person who is actively seeking to do His will or their own will? It should be our heart’s desire to understand more about the nature of God each day. The Father gives us the Word – the Son gives us the Way – the Spirit gives us the Witness. We only have to become aware!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

A CLEAN HEART!

Psalm 51:10 – Devotional

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.“

Many years ago I attended an Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts, held in Seattle. At the last session each attendee was given a small button with the letters; PBPGINFWMY. It stood for; PLEASE BE PATIENT, GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH ME YET! I liked it then and I like it now.

Sometimes spiritual leaders give the impression that they are so holy, that they dine with the angels. The truth of the matter is that we simply like angel food cake, we don’t dine with them. None of us are perfect and I think spiritual leaders need to be more open in sharing our failures. We need times of humiliation to be mind joggers that we are still under construction. I think it is safe to say that we will always be under construction.

I heard an evangelist years ago, tell of a woman who approached him after a service and mentioned that she thought he was very mature. He rushed home and looked up the word mature, so he would be better able to enjoy its depth of meaning. To his dismay, the definition said; “ripe and getting rotten.” Ooops!

Never stop the construction process. In doing God’s work there is no such thing as retirement. Keep a clean heart and keep doing the work of the Lord. God is still at work and will continue as long as we maintain a clean and steadfast spirit!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

A FAITHFUL PROMISE!

Psalm 51:10 – Devotional

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.“

Have you ever wondered who you can rely upon to do what they have promised to do? Let me ask another, more-penetrating question. Have you ever made a commitment to pray for someone and after days, weeks, or even months, later realize that you have failed to follow through? You have betrayed your trust, my friend!

It is a serious thing to fail to fulfill your promise to those around you, but what about the promises you have made to the Lord but that you have failed to keep? I must confess that there have been times I have had to hang my head in shame for not doing as I promised. I have had to ask the Lord to forgive my failure.

It is easy to see the faults of others while at the same time ignoring my own shortcomings. It is very evident that more easily we find fault in others the easier it is to ignore our own failures. May God forgive us!

There have been many times that people have disappointed me by saying one thing and then doing another. It hurt and made me feel betrayed. I want to make a new commitment not be guilty of the same failure. I commit to take my prayer burdens to the foot of the cross and entrust them to the Lord.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
