OUR FAITHFUL FRIEND! – Psalm 118:24 Devotional

OUR FAITHFUL FRIEND!

Psalm 118:24 – Devotional

Psalm 118:24

A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Being alone is a sad and dismal position. We really do need each other and a friend is one of the greatest possessions we can have. Thinking back across the years of my life, I have been blessed with a wealth of friends. Some of those friends have gone on to be with the Lord, but some are still alive.

I once received a precious gift from a dear friend. Here is what it says: “A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you’ve been, accepts who you’ve become, and still gently invites you to grow. Cecil, Thanks for being that friend. Chris.”

As close as our dearest friend or friends may be, we have a friend who is still closer. Of course I am speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who is with us at all times. We are never really alone when others have departed, for He stays with us during the dark hours of the night.

When we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, He is there beside us. When we receive devastating news, He is there to provide the comfort and solace to ease the pain. When we receive news that calls for rejoicing, He makes it even better for we have One who rejoices with us. At all times, and in every circumstance, our Dearest Friend makes our life worth living.

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

Psalm 29:2 – Devotional

Psalm 29:2

“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name;
Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

There have been times in my life when I have worked in dirt and grime. By the time I had finished my work it seemed that I had been coated with the filth. I could hardly wait to take a shower and clean myself up. In this sin sick world we often need to come near God’s cleansing shower and experience His holiness.

Reginald Heber was born on April 21, 1783 in Cheshire, England, to a heritage of wealth and culture. By the age of five, he had read the Bible so thoroughly that he could give chapter and verse for many chance quotations.

He composed many hymns, but served his entire life without seeing them published. It was only after his death that as many as 57 of his hymns were recognized. It was to the Lord that he dedicated his works. Such is the case with this week’s hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! tho’ the darkness hide Thee
Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

CHEWING THE CUD! – Psalm 1:1-2 Devotional

CHEWING THE CUD!

Psalm 1:1-2 – Devotional

Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.

In my book, “Life Is A Blast,” I recall a cow our family owned when I was a boy. Her name was Blossom and she was a gentle creature. I was too young to milk her, but I enjoyed spending time with her.

One of the things that I found fascinating about Blossom was the way she chewed the cud. She would chew and chew her hay then swallow it. After a short time there would be a rumble and she would burp up some of the partially digested hay. It is the way with cows to process their food in order to internalize it.

It is interesting that the word (meditate) in the original Hebrew is the word, hagah. It means to rumble or growl but also to muse or think deeply. In my mind as we read these two verses that begin the Book of Psalms, we are called to bring the words up over and over again until they become part of our being.

Here is the vital question—are we allowing His word to dwell in us completely? Let us chew the cud of God’s Word for it to be fully digested!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

MY STRENGTH AND SHIELD! – Psalm 28:7 Devotional

MY STRENGTH AND SHIELD!

Psalm 28:7 – Devotional

Psalm 28:7

The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoices; and with my songs I praise Him.

When I think of examples of the seemingly weak overcoming the strong, I think of David’s battle with Goliath. A boy with nothing but a sling overcame a giant with a sword and shield.

The fact of the matter is that was not all that David possessed. David had spent time with the Lord in the fields with his flocks and had developed a close relationship with his Lord. It may have seemed that David faced his adversary with just a sling and a few stones, but the God of the universe was beside him!

As you go out into the world today and in all of your tomorrows, be sure you spend time in the presence of the Lord. I urge you to dedicate yourself to spend increasingly more time in prayer and Bible study. It will serve as your weapon against the enemy of our soul!

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely only on your own understanding. In all your ways give Him the glory, and He will direct your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing.

A NEW PEOPLE! – Psalm 51:10 Devotional

A NEW PEOPLE!

Psalm 51:10 – Devotional

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

It is quite depressing to wake up each morning and be struck with the reality that we live in the midst of a sinful and unrighteous day and age. The writer of Proverbs states without equivocation that a nation is exalted when it is characterized by righteousness. That virtue is hardly to be found these days!

The writer also states that sin is a reproach to any people. The word reproach as used in this verse in the Hebrew word chesed, which in this context means a wicked thing. That is certainly an apt description of the effect sin has on our society.

What should be our response to the sinful condition of our world? We find the answer in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Many revivals in the past have been started by a few believers who were willing to humble themselves and pray until they touched the hem of His garment. It is time to evaluate our commitment to obey God.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
