TO HIM!

Ephesians 3:20-21 – Devotional

Ephesians 3:20-21

“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

I have two cousins who are expert marksmen. In speaking to one of them I discovered that each of us has a dominant eye that may not be the same as whether we are left or right handed. For example, both cousins are right handed, but shoot by sighting with their left eye.

The Bible repeatedly calls us to look to Jesus as the author and finisher of our faith. In today’s Scripture Paul admonishes his readers to focus their attention TO HIM. That means making the rational decision to take careful aim at the target of our faith.

In a world that is increasingly cluttered with things that draw our attention away from the spiritual realm, it is vital that we stop and take careful aim at the things that will matter for eternity. We know that the things of this world grow strangely dim as we focus on His glory and grace.

What are you aiming at? If you have no target in mind, you will find yourself lost in the frustrating confusion of life. If you direct your attention TO HIM, you will find that He is worthy of all of your efforts. TO HIM!

GOD’S PRECIOUS PROMISES!

Isaiah 41:10 – Devotional

Isaiah 41:10

“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.”

When you reach the age of 90, it seems like memories become more and more precious. Rather than wish for the “good ole days!” I look forward to the days of eternity that are beyond description!

As a boy one of the first verses I memorized was Isaiah 41:10. Since the day I first set it to memory, I have claimed it as my very own. In the darkest days of my life I have been comforted by these precious words.

It is impossible for me to know what anyone else is going through at a particular moment, but God knows what each of us is going through. Not only that, He knows what we have already gone through and what lies ahead for us.

I find His precious promises a great comfort knowing I can trust in Him no matter what lies ahead. I choose to trust and rely on God’s precious promises rather than the sinking sand of this sin-filled world!

Philippians 4:13 – Devotional

Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Self sufficiency is a constant battle for most of us. When we are called upon to serve the Lord, we frequently focus our attention on what we are doing rather than what God is doing through us.

If you doubt what I am saying, just let someone else get the credit for something you have done for the Lord. How do you feel? Is there a spirit of resentment and even jealousy in your heart? Ouch! That hurts, doesn’t it?

In order to get a good grasp of today’s passage of Scripture, it is essential we recall who is writing it. It is none other than Paul. He is the one who has been beaten, starved, stoned, ship-wrecked, and accused falsely. That is hard to equate with “… do all things …”

I think what Paul is trying to say is that he stays doing as the Lord directs him to do. If in that process he is allowed to observe the results, great!  If he experiences only the rejection and persecution, that is great as well. It is not his reputation that is at stake, but the Lord’s. When we “do all things through Christ” we rest in His strength.

What are you doing for the Lord? Are you doing it in His strength or are you relying on your own ability? Remember, He is the One who strengthens us!

PREPARE TO GROW!

1 Peter 2:2

“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.”

In the Pacific Northwest it is not an uncommon sight to see bare hillsides where timber has been cut. It is also fairly common to see trucks carrying huge loads of old growth logs. I always marvel at their size as I pass these log trucks.

Many of the logs we see harvested in this part of the country come from third and fourth growth trees that have been planted after previous logs have been harvested. Owners of the land soon plant seedlings and in a short time they are young trees.

Day by day we observe the passing of the saints of God. They have been our mentors and guides, but as the years slip by they pass the torch on to the next generation of believers.

It is time for each believer to recognize that responsibility for growth in the Lord is a fact of life. We need to strive to become “OLD GROWTH” saints of God who will stand shoulder to shoulder creating a mighty forest for the Lord.
