FAITH DEFINED! – Hebrews 11:1 Devotional

FAITH DEFINED!

Hebrews 11:1 – Devotional

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Many times across the years I have asked individuals as well as groups to give their definition of faith. In many instances they have recited Hebrews 11:1. That is well and good, but when I pressed them to explain what that means to them on a personal level I was generally met with a blank stare.

The vital element of faith as given in this verse is evidence. Having spent many years in the field of criminal justice I quickly discovered that evidence is essential in order to substantiate the claims for or against the charges. In Hebrews 11:1 we find evidence that is yet to be seen or experienced. How can that be?

I liken that to making a trip to buy an ice cream cone. On the way we begin to think about our favorite flavor. Our salivary glands begin to kick into operation and we start to enjoy the ice cream before we ever arrive at the store.

In like manner we can spiritualize this same concept. Faith is stepping out and trusting God’s promises before they ever come to pass. He says it — we believe it, and that is faith in action!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

OUR LORD LOVES US ENOUGH! – Colossians 3:17 Devotional

OUR LORD LOVES US ENOUGH!

Colossians 3:17 – Devotional

Colossians 3:17

Let whatever you do in word or deed; do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

I was a boy during a time when love and discipline went hand in hand. I received my share of spankings, but the truth be known, I got by with many deeds for which a switch was deserved.

That sounds weird in a day and age when discipline is considered an evil deed and the result is disorder, conflict, and chaos. We humans have a strange habit of going to extremes. From too much to too little we are prone to err.

One of the ways to keep discipline in proper order is to spend time in prayer, before, during and after discipline. The broken hearted prayer of a parent about to dispense discipline will often have a greater effect than the discipline itself.

When we do everything for the Lord, we place ourselves in His loving hands and allow Him to guide us in our actions. I recall once again the words of a juvenile offender under my supervision: “My dad doesn’t love me enough to discipline me.” As we stand before the Lord who died for our sins we can say with complete confidence; “OUR LORD LOVES US ENOUGH!”

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

REMEMBER ME! – Luke 23:39-43 Devotional

REMEMBER ME!

Luke 23:39-43 – Devotional

Luke 23:39-43

One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, “If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!”

But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Don’t you even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” He said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

Jesus said to him, “Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.

This Friday we have a special treat for you. Russ Hansen has combined AI and Scripture to produce an original song entitled, “Remember Me!” based on the account of Jesus’ conversation with the thief on the cross. We trust you enjoy this musical inspiration today. Russ would appreciate your feedback at inspiration@thegoodbookcompany.com.

REMEMBER ME
(Inspired by Luke 23:39-43)

The sky grew dark, the crowd grew still,
Three crosses stood on Calvary’s hill.
One mocked in pride, one bowed his head in need,
“Lord, remember me,” was his plea.

Remember me when my hope is gone,
When I am weak and can’t hold on.
By Your grace, through mercy’s plea,
“When You come into your Kingdom, Lord, remember me.”

No time to serve, no life to show,
Only eleventh hour faith in the love You bestow.
I turned to You through pain and loss,
Today you’re with Me upon a cross.

Remember me when my hope is gone,
When I am weak and can’t hold on.
By Your grace, through mercy’s plea,
“When You come into your Kingdom, Lord, remember me.”

When my final breath I breathe,
Your promise still will comfort me.
Though I’m unworthy, yet I believe—
You won’t forget, You’ll remember me.

Remember me, O Lord, remember me,
By Your wounds, You’ve set me free.
When heaven’s gates swing wide for me,
I’ll sing forever—You remembered me.

“I assure you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
In paradise.
“You’ll be with Me in paradise.”

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
