PAY ATTENTION!

Revelation 3:2 – Devotional

Revelation 3:2

“Pay attention and strengthen the things that you still have, that are about to die, for I find your works imperfect in the sight of God.”

Several years ago my wife Joyce and I were stopped at a traffic light when we saw our newspaper delivery man about to enter the intersection. He saw us and waved just as he was entering the intersection. Joyce and I both immediately shouted, “Watch Out!”

Naturally he could not hear us. What we saw, and that he failed to see because he was waving to us, was a stopped vehicle just ahead of him. There was a crunch of metal as he collided with the other car. He was not traveling very a fast so there were no injuries.

That particular mishap has always reminded me that it is vital to keep our attention on what is going on around us. In today’s Scripture we have the warning from the Lord to be watchful and to strengthen the spiritual things that will count for eternity.

As we read the messages the Lord gives in Revelation 2 & 3 to each of the seven churches, it is interesting that He says He knows their works. That is just as true for us today as it was for the churches in that day. Here is our question: Are we paying attention to God’s Word?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

SILENT NIGHT! – Luke 2:2-10 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

SILENT NIGHT!

Luke 2:2-10 – Devotional

Luke 2:2-10

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.’”

Several years ago our church had finished a wonderful Christmas Eve service. Earlier there had been candles placed inside white lunch bags that lined the driveway leading to the church.

Joyce and I had volunteered to extinguish the candles after everyone had left. It had snowed a few days earlier and there were still a few inches on the ground. The temperature was below freezing when we crunched through the snow to the far end of the driveway. It was so quiet and beautiful that we were moved in our spirit with the beauty of God’s creation and the carol Silent Night.

The words of this well loved carol were written in 1818 by Josef Mohr after he had seen a play about the birth of Jesus. He was in a reflective mood and walked to a hill overlooking his village in the Austrian Alps. The view of the snow covered village reminded him of a poem he had written a few years earlier. The poem was about the night the angel announced the birth of Jesus.

The next day he took the words of his poem to Franz Gruber, who had just composed a melody. He re-worked the melody to match the words to the poem Mohr written. Our beloved carol, “Silent Night” was born.

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

SILENT NIGHT

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born
Christ, the Savior is born

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

JUST THE RIGHT TIME! – Galatians 4:4-5 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

JUST THE RIGHT TIME!

Galatians 4:4-5 – Devotional

Galatians 4:4-5

“God has sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”

“I want it and I want it right now!” Those words are often screamed out by a spoiled child who has not been properly trained. Well, let me be honest and admit that many adults exhibit that same behavior, if not in those exact words.

In my 88 years of life I have experienced disappointment when my requests were not met at the time I asked for them. But, the things that I thought I had to have at a particular time would have been to my detriment (or to others) if my timing was met. I have come to realize that God’s timing is always better than mine.

God knew when the time was right for His Son, Jesus, to be born. There were those who wanted it far sooner and others who still deny that Jesus is the promised Messiah of Israel who came, IN THE FULLNESS OF TIME!

God has all things under control. We need to submit to His loving care and allow His fullness of time to become our fullness of time as well. Even Jesus submitted to His Father’s will when He prayed, “… not My will but Thine be done” (Luke 22:42). God knows when it is; JUST THE RIGHT TIME!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
