NEAR THE CROSS!

1 Peter 4:12-13 –  Devotional

1 Peter 4:12-13

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.”

Fanny J. Crosby was a remarkable woman. There are so many accomplishments in her life that it is hard to comprehend them all. She lost her eyesight because of the treatment of a careless doctor. In spite of her loss she memorized huge portions of Scripture just by listening to her grandmother read them to her. She is credited with writing over 10,000 hymns during her life.

Fanny began writing poetry at an early age, but another amazing fact is that she did not accept Jesus as her personal Savior until she was 31. She was attending a service on November 20, 1850. The congregation was singing a hymn by Isaac Watts; At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light. She knew she needed the Lord and that very night He became her Savior and Lord. Her desire was to always stay close to Jesus who had paid the ultimate price for her salvation. Her desire was to remain near her Lord. She immediately wrote the words to the hymn for this week.

Near the Cross

1. Jesus, keep me near the cross;
there a precious fountain,
free to all, a healing stream,
flows from Calvary’s mountain.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,

‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

2. Near the cross, a trembling soul,
love and mercy found me;
there the bright and morning star
sheds its beams around me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

3. Near the cross! O Lamb of God,
bring its scenes before me;
help me walk from day to day
with its shadow o’er me.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

4. Near the cross I will watch and wait,
hoping, trusting ever,
till I reach the golden strand
just beyond the river.

Refrain: In the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever,
‘till my raptured soul shall find rest beyond the river.

MODERN DAY IDOLS! – Psalm 135:18 Devotional

MODERN DAY IDOLS!

Psalm 135:18 –  Devotional

Psalm 135:18

“Those who make idols are just like them (the idols they make), as are all who trust in them.”

We like to picture ourselves as being wise and far removed from the time when people bowed before idols and even offered human sacrifices to them. It seems beyond our modern thinking to imagine that people would make something themselves and then worship that object. BEEP!

That is precisely what we do in placing things or people as the object or objects of our devotion. We can easily devote our time, treasure and devotion to the very things that are of our own creation.

Stop for a little while and consider what you devote your thought life to. Do you meditate on things of eternal value as found in God’s Word or do you fantasize about worldly things that are contrary to all that is holy and good?

Take time to evaluate the idols that may have been created in deep recesses of your heart. Confess the sinful things that have been lurking in the place that you secretly spend your time in adoration. Make worship of the Lord your priority.

I CAN DO IT! – Philippians 4:12-13 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

I CAN DO IT!

Philippians 4:12-13 –  Devotional

Philippians 4:12-13

“I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

I can recall many years ago when I was just a lad, thinking that I could accomplish some feat that was actually beyond my boyish ability. When my dad offered to do it I would refuse his help and say, “I can do it!” I was usually wrong!

I fear that many times we find ourselves in the same spiritual quandary. We try to do things our way, on our terms, and on our schedule. We fail to wait for the Lord to give us the approval and seem to feel that we can wait until we make a mess of things before we call upon Him to help us.

Paul writes to the church at Philippi and to us in our day, what he has experienced in his ministry. There has been good times and desperate times. The vital lesson that he wants to share with us is that God uses both the good times and the not so good times to get the glory and accomplish His purposes.

If you have not discovered the power God brings as we go through the tough times, get prepared for a rich blessing! God always gets the victory!

CHOOSE RIGHT! – Deuteronomy 30:15-16 Devotional

CHOOSE RIGHT!

Deuteronomy 30:15-16 –  Devotional

Deuteronomy 30:15-16

“See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess.”

There are many choices we are forced to make in our life. Some are easy and some are difficult. Some are multiple choice and some are either or. Some things slap us in the face and are not choices at all but a new normal that is now ours.

It occurs to me that each of us is faced with choices each and every day. It is what we choose that determines what happens next. If we seek to make life easier for ourselves we generally, if not always, hit a brick wall.

People that plan for only the fleeting pleasures of this world will soon discover that what they have chosen is not sweet, but bitter and deadly. When we choose the way the Lord has offered to us, we find the life that is satisfying and eternal. Ask God to show you from His Word the way to make the right choices as He leads you to His ultimate life in heaven with Him.

ON ALERT! – Isaiah 40:28 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

ON ALERT!

Isaiah 40:28 Devotional

Isaiah 40:28

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.”

There have been times in my life when I was required to stand alert. By that I mean that while others were off duty and relaxed; those of us who were on alert had to remain vigilant and ready for action. This was true when I served as a police officer and when in the Air Force.

Much more critical has been the requirement to be on alert in my spiritual life. It is easy to become spiritually lethargic and just drift along. Years ago I read words of wisdom to the effect; A week without reading your Bible will make you weak.”

We live in perilous times. In the midst of sin and depravity there seems to be a lazy attitude of indifference in the lives of many believers. Many seem to feel that their walk with the Lord is of mild importance on their priority list.

IT IS TIME TO SOUND THE ALERT! The time for action in our spiritual life is now. Before it is too late we need to be on alert to the encroaching danger of sin. Spend time in the word and in prayer. Speak the words of life to a dying world!

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!
