OUR SOURCE OF JOY! – James 1:2-3 Devotional

James 1:2-3

“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”

I have heard people ask another person why they are so happy. Actually true happiness is only the result of something good or pleasing happening. Joy on the other hand is the choice a person makes in spite of what happens.

Unfortunately I have counseled many people across the years who behaved as if they had been “baptized in vinegar.” Some of these people have been Christians. I know that their demeanor has been a terrible witness to non-believers.

I have said it before and I will say it again; “The way we live is far more vital than what we say.” I do not want to imply that we are not to share our faith with others, but it needs to be reflected in how we live.

I would like each of us to prayerfully answer the following questions: If Jesus was standing beside us, would He be pleased with the things we say? The music we listen to? The programs we watch on television? The things we read? The activities we engage in? The people we associate with? This could go on and on couldn’t it? I pray that we will find our true joy in Him!

FEAR-SERVE-RECALL! – 1 Samuel 12:24 Devotional

1 Samuel 12:24

“Only fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you.”

Across the years I have counseled many individuals who had yielded to sin and as a result were now suffering the consequences. All too often they were not so eager to turn from their sin, but to find relief from the consequence of the sin. Does that sound familiar to you?

Samuel was frustrated that the Israelites had sinned by demanding a king in order to be like the other nations around them. Sadly they were blinded to the reality that these sinful nations were suffering from the consequences of their sin.

Samuel gave his people instructions that still apply today. First and foremost we are to fear the Lord. This is to be a reverential fear that seeks to please God in all that we do and say. Then we are to serve Him with all of our heart and strength.

The last admonition is to recall. This is a pleasant reflection on all of the blessings that the Lord has showered on us across the years of our life. When we recall His blessings we will find ourselves discovering the pure joy of our salvation!

THIS IS NOT THE END! – Deuteronomy 30:19 Devotional

Deuteronomy 30:19

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”

It seems as if this recurring theme arises on a regular basis. At least it does in my time of study in the Word of the Lord. When I search for the answer to why it arises time after time, I come to the conclusion that it is because people so often choose to reject God’s offer of eternal life.

Every day our newspapers or other forms of media announce the death of rich and famous people as well as those who have virtually no family or friends. It is important to remind ourselves that this life is not the end. It is the one and only time and place to determine where we will spend eternity.

One millisecond after we draw our final breath, we will either breathe pure celestial air of our eternal abode, or the acrid stench of eternal suffering and torment. Here and now is our only time and place to determine which place will be our eternal destiny. CHOOSE LIFE!

LIGHT IN OUR SINFUL WORLD! – Proverbs 14:34 Devotional

Proverbs 14:34

“Godliness makes a nation great, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

If we were to select any type of media today, we would find a tragic display of sinful actions. I can recall a time when godly conduct was admired and sought after. That is not the case in our modern world. Our current society seems to be seeking the grungiest of the grungy to emulate.

It is a sad commentary that even some of our modern churches have chosen to give their rules and regulations (or the removal of them) a higher priority than the Word of God. In essence they have become their own god – – notice the lower case “g”.

Jesus told His disciples that a sign of the last days would be similar to the days of Noah before the flood. The people of Noah’s day were interested in only those things that satisfied their carnal appetites. Does that sound like our day and age?

It is our duty as true believers to allow our light to shine brighter than ever before as sin makes the world around us darker and darker. Are you and I shining bright for Christ in the inky darkness of this age? I pray that we are.
