RUN TOWARD YOUR GIANT!

1 Samuel 17 – Devotional

1 Samuel 17:48

“As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him.”

This week we have a special new song for you created by Russ Hansen entitled, “Run Toward Your Giant.” He’d appreciate your feedback on this song–please send it to him at inspiration@thegoodbookcompany.com.

Run Toward Your Giant (inspired by 1 Samuel 17)

[Verse 1]
Forty days the giant called out from the hill,
every soldier trembling, every army still,
then a boy came running with his shepherd’s bag,
carrying a promise that would never sag.

[Verse 2]
His brothers laughed and said “go back home to your sheep,”
Saul said “you’re too little for the battle to keep,”
but the boy said “I have faced the lion and the bear,
and the God who saved me then is the same God here.”

[Pre-Chorus]
It’s not the size of the fighter in the field,
it’s the size of the God behind the shield,
David didn’t run toward Goliath in his own name,
he ran toward the giant in the Lord’s great fame.

[Chorus]
Run toward your giant, don’t you turn and flee,
the same God who saved David is the same God for me,
what looks like a mountain from where you stand
is already crumbling in the Master’s hand.
Run toward your giant.
Run.

[Verse 3]
Maybe your Goliath wears a different face,
debt or doubt or darkness stealing all your grace,
a diagnosis spoken like a death sentence loud,
or a lie you’ve believed that’s become your shroud.

[Verse 4]
You’ve been in that valley forty days or more,
wondering if heaven even hears you anymore,
but the stone is in your hand and the creek bed’s near,
and the God of angel armies whispers “I am here.”

Run.

[Bridge]
Everyone who saw him said the boy would fall,
but the ones who doubt you don’t determine your call,
God didn’t pick the tallest, didn’t pick the strong,
He picked the one who knew where his help came from all along.
He picks the ones who know.
He picks the ones who know.

[Verse 5]
When the stone left David’s hand the giant never knew
that the God of Israel was already coming through,
and the thing that tried to silence you and take you down
is the very thing God’s using for your testimony now.

[Final Chorus]
Run toward your giant, don’t you turn and flee,
the same God who saved David is the same God for me,
what looks like a mountain from where you stand
is already crumbling in the Master’s hand.
Run toward your giant, child.
Run toward your giant.
Run.

[Outro — slow and declarative]
The battle belongs to the Lord.
The battle belongs to the Lord.
Pick up your stone and run.
The battle belongs to the Lord.

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Blessings dear hearts! May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

DELIGHT THE LORD! – 1 Samuel 19:16 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

DELIGHT THE LORD!

1 Samuel 19:16 – Devotional

1 Samuel 19:16

“Does the LORD delight as much in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen for His voice is better than the fat of rams.”

When I was a Juvenile Probation Officer I frequently counseled my probationers to be careful about their actions. Just as frequently they ignored my warnings which subsequently led to their re-arrest and being back in Juvenile Court.

We have often heard the expression “haste makes waste.” This is a truism which has merit. It is also true that being careless leads to waste and chaos. It may not be one’s intention to do something wrong, but careless behavior has consequences.

Many people have made a commitment to serve the Lord with all of their heart, mind, and soul. This is a good starting point, but it is just that. Commitment must be followed up with positive and continuous steps of action.

Have you made promises and then allowed the things of the world to slip in which cause you to become careless? Has your careless disregard of spiritual matters then led to problems in your relationships with God and other people? Make a fresh commitment to the Lord and commit to yourself to delight the Lord!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

PLEASING THE LORD! – 1 Samuel 15:22 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

PLEASING THE LORD!

1 Samuel 15:22 – Devotional

1 Samuel 15:22

“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?”

I was married to my precious wife, Joyce, for 62 years. I found great joy in doing things that would delight my sweet wife. Joyce enjoyed the typical gifts such as flowers or candy, but that was not what brought her true delight. What brought her the greatest delight was when I would straighten up around my area.

Yep! You guessed it … I have a tendency to create messes! It seems like I always have the notion that I may need something someday, so I just add it to the ever-growing pile of things on my desk or near my chair. Later, as I gaze at a particular item, I wonder why in the world I ever saved it. Joyce was right!

In those times when I bit the bullet and cleaned up my work area, it delighted her. I only wish she were still here so I could try to delight her once again!

In today’s Scripture we read about what delights the Lord. It is not in what we try to give Him of our worldly possessions, but His delight is in our obedience to His word. When God says it we need to believe it and continue obeying. I want to please Him!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

FACING OUR GOLIATH! – 1 Samuel 17:45 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

FACING OUR GOLIATH!

1 Samuel 17:45 – Devotional

1 Samuel 17:45

“David said to the Philistine, ‘You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’

Years ago a hamburger chain featured a commercial featuring a tiny lady (I think her name was Clara), who stood at the counter of a competitor’s hamburger stand and shouted the words; “Where’s the beef?”

In our modern church world we almost feel like shouting; “Where’s the power?” It seems that the modern day church is weak and anemic to the point of being almost ineffective. We may talk a big talk, but where is the power?

In today’s Scripture, David gives us the answer. He was faced with a giant of a man who was armed with weapons that would kill David instantaneously. David did not have similar weapons. He had a power far greater than Goliath possessed. He had the name of the Lord of hosts in his arsenal. It killed the giant.

Who is the Goliath in your life? Whatever you do, do not try to fight with the weapons of this world. Call upon the Lord to provide you with all you need to slay that giant that is facing you. That is the real power!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

During the years of our marriage, I found great joy in doing things that would delight my sweet wife. Sure, Joyce enjoyed the typical gifts such as flowers or candy, but what brought her true delight was when I would straighten up around my area.

I have a tendency to create messes!

One of these days we will be together again, but until then I keep on delighting the Lord.
