COME THOU FOUNT! – Psalm 36:9 Devotional

COME THOU FOUNT!

Psalm 36:9 – Devotional

Psalm 36:9

“For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Robert Robinson who lived from 1735 to 1790, was saved while attending a service conducted by the famous evangelist George Whitefield. Following his conversion he entered the Christian ministry, but like so many, he would lose his fervor for God.

The words of the hymn “Come Thou Fount” were written to express his own need for a closer walk with the Lord. His prayer is that his heart may be re-tuned to be in perfect harmony with the will of God.

In stanza two he speaks of his conversion. The word “Ebenezer” refers to a time and place when he actually received the Lord into his life as personal Savior and Lord. He goes on to remind himself and others that it is necessary to daily remind ourselves what a debt we owe to the Lord for our salvation at His expense.

Come Thou Fount

Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount-I’m fixed upon it-mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, bind my wand’ring heart to Thee;
Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it; seal it for Thy courts above.

GOD’S PROMISE! – Isaiah 41:10 Devotional

GOD’S PROMISE!

Isaiah 41:10 – Devotional

Isaiah 41:10

“Do not fear for I am with you; do not be depressed, for I am your God. I will be your strength and your help in the time of need and will hold you up by the power of My righteousness.”

Did you know that fear paralyzes? Perhaps most of us have heard the expression, “He froze like a deer in the headlights.” Think of the most frightful experiences of your life and you may be able to relate to that poor animal.

Satan uses fear to keep believers from doing the things that the Lord has called us and empowered us to accomplish. Satan causes us to imagine that we will be scorned if we obey the Lord, so we tend to stare into his headlights and do nothing.

In the midst of our fear we are given this powerful verse in Isaiah 41:10. There are two things that we are instructed to do: don’t fear and don’t be dismayed. The Lord promises that He will strengthen us and help us and uphold us with His righteous right hand. The right hand is the symbol of ultimate divine power.

I challenge you to let the Lord fight your battles with the enemy. Trust Him completely and know that He never leaves you or forsakes you but will always be with you.

GOD’S GIFT FOR US TO GIVE! – 2 Timothy 1:9 Devotional

GOD’S GIFT FOR US TO GIVE!

2 Timothy 1:9 – Devotional

2 Timothy 1:9

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

Why am I here? What is the purpose of my existence? Has God given me a reason for being? Do I have an impact on the lives of those around me? Have I seen God at work in the lives of those around me because I was used by the Lord?

These are just a few of the questions we may ask ourselves to determine if and what God’s purpose is for each of us. I have even counseled people who felt that they had no spiritual purpose in life. Others had gifts and talents, but they had nothing to give and so they left the work of the Lord to others.

I once passed a church and saw a man I knew mowing the lawn. When I asked him if the church hired him to mow the lawn, he informed me that they had no idea he was doing it. He just saw a need and performed it. I discovered that there were a number of elderly people that he helped out. It was his purpose for those in need.

It may not be a ministry such as preaching or teaching that is your purpose in serving the Lord. When the Holy Spirit opens your eyes to some need, no matter how insignificant it may seem, go for it! Your purpose might seem unimportant to you, but obeying the Lord is vital to being a faithful servant.

JOY AND PEACE! – Romans 15:13 Devotional

JOY AND PEACE!

Romans 15:13 – Devotional

Romans 15:13

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

If there were some way of measuring the amount of joy and peace you had in your life, what would that gauge read? I fear that for many it would be closer to empty than full.

That is tragic! If ever there was a time when the world needed the joy and peace of the Lord, it is today. There is no end to the violence and hatred that surrounds us. But there is also no end to the joy and peace that is ours through our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

The call to go forth to bring hope to the hopeless people around us is loud and clear. We have a great opportunity to do something significant in our day and age. The Lord has given His new life that we in turn can share that new life with others.

I remember a song we sang when I was a young boy. It had the words; I have the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart to stay. I want that joy to be seen by others as I live my life for the Lord.

GIVING AND RECEIVING! – Luke 6:38 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

GIVING AND RECEIVING!

Luke 6:38 – Devotional

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

Yesterday I was on my way home following church service. As I approached an intersection I noticed people leaving their cars and running into the intersection. As I came closer I saw that a motorcycle was on its side and the rider was receiving help to get his cycle righted. It was way too heavy for him to lift alone and required the assistance of others.

As I have replayed that incident in my mind over the past several hours, I have become aware that there are many people around us who find themselves in need. They may not have a motorcycle lying on its side, but they are just as needy.

When we consider what God calls us to do we need to be aware that there are countless ways of being the Lord’s servants to those around us. At my age I am not able to accomplish many physical tasks that once seemed so simple.

I have had the blessing of giving to others across the years and to tell the truth it is much easier to do for others than it is to humble yourself and allow others to do for you. I guess we might all be like that man who needed help getting his cycle back up once again. There is a time for giving as well as for receiving!
