O SACRED HEAD, NOW WOUNDED!

Matthew 27:42 – Devotional

Matthew 27:42

“He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.

Let’s contemplate the words of Scripture found in Psalm 22 that foretell with amazing detail the agony Jesus suffered on the cross for us.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

PSALM 22

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me,
so far from my cries of anguish?

My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,
by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One;
you are the one Israel praises.
In you our ancestors put their trust;
they trusted and you delivered them.
To you they cried out and were saved;
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not a man,
scorned by everyone, despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
they hurl insults, shaking their heads.

“He trusts in the Lord,” they say,
“let the Lord rescue him.
Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.”

Yet you brought me out of the womb;
you made me trust in you, even at my mother’s breast.
From birth I was cast on you;
from my mother’s womb you have been my God.

Do not be far from me, for trouble is near
and there is no one to help.

Many bulls surround me;
strong bulls of Bashan encircle me.
Roaring lions that tear their prey
open their mouths wide against me.

I am poured out like water,
and all my bones are out of joint.
My heart has turned to wax;
it has melted within me.

My mouth is dried up like a potsherd,
and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth;
you lay me in the dust of death.

Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me;
they pierce my hands and my feet.
All my bones are on display; people stare and gloat over me.

They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.

But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
Deliver me from the sword,
my precious life from the power of the dogs.

Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
save me from the horns of the wild oxen.

I will declare your name to my people;
in the assembly I will praise you.

You who fear the Lord, praise him!
All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
For he has not despised or scorned
the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
but has listened to his cry for help.

From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.

The poor will eat and be satisfied;
those who seek the Lord will praise him—
may your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—
those who cannot keep themselves alive.

Posterity will serve him; future generations
will be told about the Lord.

They will proclaim his righteousness,
declaring to a people yet unborn:
He has done it!

A STORY OF TWO SONS! – Luke 15:30 Devotional

A STORY OF TWO SONS!

Luke 15:30 – Devotional

Luke 15:30

“As soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.

I once encountered a brother and sister that had been hostile toward each other for years. Even their children had deep hostility toward their cousins because of their parent’s anger toward each other. Prior to the funeral of their mother I met with the families and with God’s help and scripture we restored their relationship.

It is interesting that when the younger brother had received his inheritance, his older brother received his as well. While the younger brother departed for a far country, it appears the elder brother departed for a far field, one of envy and resentment.

He had no idea what his younger brother was doing, yet he accused him of spending his money on harlots. Sometimes our false accusations reveal what our own temptations are. This older brother who had also received his inheritance evidently did not enjoy it.

His refusal to join the feast reveals the condition of his heart. While his brother had been willing to become a servant, this older brother rejected his father’s plea to come home. Which sibling describes you? The one who returned or the one who resented?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

PURE MILK OF GOD’S WORD! – 1 Peter 2:2 Devotional

PURE MILK OF GOD’S WORD!

1 Peter 2:2 – Devotional

1 Peter 2:2

“As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

I recall watching our grandchildren tasting their first solid food. It brought back many memories when our three children tasted their first solid food. As I recall it was always mashed potatoes and gravy that I slipped into their eager mouths.

I had copied what I had observed my dad frequently do. It was usually the men in the family who did it. It was never my wife or mom who did the sneaky deed. My wife, Joyce, or my mom would chastise us, but it was fun anyway!

It is humorous to talk about our babies needing their solid food, but all too often we have huge congregations of believers who still exist on predigested spiritual food instead of sinking their teeth into something solid by devoting quality time in the personal study of God’s Word.

As you honestly evaluate your spiritual life, where do you see yourself? Are you able to dig into the solid meat of God’s Word or is it necessary for you to have someone else feed you? It is time for us to grow up!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

ETERNAL LIFE! – 1 John 2:17 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

ETERNAL LIFE!

1 John 2:17 – Devotional

1 John 2:17

“The world is passing away and the lust of it, but the one who does the will of God abides forever.

Some quick-witted person has observed that none of us will get out of this world alive. While that may be true in the physical sense, it certainly is not true in the eternal sense!

From time to time I allow my mind to attempt to fathom the reality of eternal life. I soon realize for the human mind it is impossible. We have always experienced a beginning and ending, so the idea of everlasting eternity stretches our mind past the breaking point. We simply must accept eternity as an unknown reality!

The reality of eternal life is true for the believer and also for the unbeliever. Each and every human will live forever. We will live in heaven with God or in hell with Satan. I have chosen eternal life in heaven with God!

Our decision as to where we will spend eternity must be made before we die. Now is the day of decision and sadly some have delayed to make the decision and the hour of death has taken them. I implore you to make sure you accept the glorious offer of eternal life while there is still time!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

A DANGEROUS WORLD! – Luke 10:41 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

A DANGEROUS WORLD!

Luke 10:41 – Devotional

Luke 10:41

“Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things.

Accidents happen! Sometimes they are totally beyond our control, but at other times we take risks that lead to accidents. During major flooding events, drivers are warned about the dangers of driving through high water. Television cameras record drivers ignoring warnings before being completely swamped.

Clearly the drivers thought they were able to make it across the flooded roadway, but they endangered their life as well as others. Many accidents could have been avoided.

There are times in life where we have the best intentions in the world, but for some reason or another, we fail to follow through. The results can be catastrophic or at least lead to difficult situations. Our actions may be unintentional but risky.

God calls us to walk circumspectly and obediently. We need to search the word of God continually and pattern our life accordingly. Living a life of victory and meaning is the result of staying close to Jesus. Trust and obey — there is no other way!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
