IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL!

Psalm 107:29-30 – Devotional

Psalm 107:29-30

“The LORD calms the storm, so that the waves are still. They are glad because they are quiet. He guides them to their desired haven.”

 

It seems that each of us is called upon to face storms in our life. It may be physical infirmity, financial reversals or the loss of a loved one. It is not the storm that matters, but how we react to the storm.

Back in 1873, Horatio Spafford and his family were scheduled to sail from New York to England where he was to assist the great evangelist, D.L. Moody. Because of a last minute business crisis Mr. Spafford sent his family on ahead and he would follow on a later ship.

Unfortunately the ship his family was sailing on collided with another ship and sank. There was a terrible loss of life, including the Spafford’s four daughters. It was nine days after the tragedy that Horatio Spafford received a cable from his wife that simply said, “Saved alone.” What poignant words.

Later, as he was sailing to meet his wife in England Horatio Spafford asked the captain of his ship to let him know when they were near where the accident had occurred. It was there that he penned the words of this beautiful hymn; It Is Well with My Soul.

When sorrows like sea billows roll;

THE BREAD OF LIFE!

John 6:47-48 – Devotional

John 6:47-48

“Without question, I tell you: anyone who truly believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.”

All around us are people who are seeking answers. So-called psychics claim to have all the answers, yet when push comes to shove, they are never able to save others or even themselves.

For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our personal Savior, we may have the same problems and challenges as the unbelievers, but our hope is not in what benefit we receive here on earth (and there are many benefits), but our great reward is waiting for us in glory.

Christ’s faithful followers look beyond the travails of this life and see the reward that Christ has provided for those who place their trust in Him. In John 14, Christ assures us that He is preparing an eternal home designed for us in glory.

My hope is not so much to reside in the spectacular home he has prepared for me, but to spend eternity with the Savior who loved a sinner like me. I want to praise and glorify Him forever and ever!

TRUST IN THE LORD!

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Devotional

Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the LORD with all of your heart rather than relying on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will lead you.”

All of us have some core of reliance. It may be our physical attributes, our mental acumen, our family heritage, or some other basis of reliance. Then there are those of us who seemingly have little or no self esteem. We delight in the fact that we are nothing and therefore have no responsibility to do anything. BEEP!

There are some people who seem to take pride in belittling themselves and taking glory in that they are nothing. That foolish attitude reveals that they have become guilty of the pride in their humility. How utterly foolish!

I once heard a pastor share his dismay by a comment one of his flock shared after he had preached a message on humility. This person was simply glowing as she shared how much the message had meant to her. She felt she had very few spiritual gifts to offer the Lord, but she was proud of her gift of humility! YUCK!

We all need to lean more on the Lord and seek His leadership in our life. Jesus made it very clear that to offer a cup of water in His name was far more vital to a parched throat than the most eloquent sermon. Let’s live our faith!

LIVE WITH A GLOW!

John 16:33b

“In this world you will have to endure tribulation, but be filled with pure joy, for I have overcome the world.”

From time to time I have encountered people that are sour-faced and see only doom and gloom. They see trials and troubles in even the most glorious of times. I have to confess that I usually try to insure that I have something to attend to that will give me an excuse to get away from them and spend time with the Lord.

Now that I have confessed one of my short-comings, let me share that there are other people who I find great delight in spending quality time with. These are people who keep their eyes on the Lord and in His precious Word!

The reality is that we are one or the other of those qualities to those we encounter in our daily activities. It causes me to ask myself the question; “Is my life projecting a growl or a glow?

There is no question about the fact that we will all face adversity in this world. Jesus shares this reality in today’s Scripture. But with the reality that we will all face trials, He will be with us and that is enough to give us a glow!
