THE SWEET BY AND BY!

Matthew 6:27 – Devotional

Matthew 6:27

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”

True Christian character is certainly seen in our biblical heroes, but it may often be seen in those of more recent times. Hope is a character quality that looks beyond our immediate circumstances and shows what we as believers have waiting for us.

In the Sweet By and By, is one of the most enduring songs written after the Civil War. It was composed by Sanford Bennett who was the owner of a drugstore in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. He had just returned from the war. A friend, Joseph Webster, a gifted musician trained formally in composition, came to the store each day to talk and play chess. Often Webster would be depressed and down.

When asked what was wrong, Webster would often reply; “It will be alright by and by.” That idea hit Bennett like a flash of sunlight! As Bennett later described the incident, he took out a pen and it was all over in thirty minutes. A new hymn was born. In short order he was singing the words along with Webster and two other friends. That hymn was perfect for the post-Civil War era because it conveyed pathos with a mixture of comforting warmth. It came to typify the virtues of spiritual hope.

Sweet By and By

1. There is a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way,
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Chorus: In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by;

We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

2. We shall sing on that beautiful shore,
The melodious songs of the blest;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

Chorus: In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

3. To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise,
For the glorious gift of His love,
And the blessings that hallow our days.

Chorus: In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

GOD’S ROYAL LAW! – James 2:8 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

GOD’S ROYAL LAW!

James 2:8 – Devotional

James 2:8

“If you truly fulfill the royal law as it appears in Scripture ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself,’ you do well.”

In today’s Scripture, James quotes from Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament. It reminds me that the writers of the New Testament were serious students of what Old Testament writers had penned.

In the days in which James lived and penned the book which bears his name, it was no simple task to search the Scriptures. In our modern world we have so many printed and electronic sources to God’s Word that we often take it for granted.

Every time we read the words of Scripture we need to pause and thank our precious Lord that He has given us words of life and vitality. We never should feel as if we are weak and anemic in the spiritual sense.

God’s Royal Law is ours to possess and appropriate in living our life for Him. Never feel that you have nothing to offer others. Share the truth you discover in the Bible with someone near you. It will bring new life to you and the one you bless with the Word!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

DO NOT HAVE FAVORITES! – James 2:1 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

DO NOT HAVE FAVORITES!

James 2:1 – Devotional

James 2:1

“Brothers and sisters, do not hold the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of glory, with partiality.”

I have seen families, clubs, Bible study groups, and even churches decimated because favoritism was shown to one or more of the members. Sometimes this has been unintentional, but at other times it was totally intended.

There is a commercial being aired at present where a young boy and girl were choosing who would be on their team. The choices were a retired professional athlete and another young boy. The girl who selected first chose the professional.

Now let us suddenly change the rules of that commercial and make the competition one of mathematic ability rather than professional sport. The young boy just happens to be a genius in math and the pro athlete flunked beginning arithmetic. Now who would have the edge?

Sadly it is very easy to fall into the trap of showing partiality. We should always treat those around us with the love that Jesus has shown to us. As He has so loved and given Himself for us, we need to love and give ourselves to the world through Him!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

BE A DOER OF GOD’S WORD! – James 1:22 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

BE A DOER OF GOD’S WORD!

James 1:22 – Devotional

James 1:22

“Be doers of God’s Word, and not simply hearers, deceiving yourselves.”

It is easy to be caught up in the emotion of the moment after reading a moving passage of Scripture or listening to a powerful sermon. The fact of the matter is that it is not what we feel that matters, but what actions we take!

In my dim and distant past I seem to recall reading the phrase; “I would rather see a good sermon rather than simply hear one!” I am sure that I have not remembered the statement exactly, but it is something like that.

The gist of what James is saying in today’s verse, is that God calls us to go far beyond simply hearing or reading the Word of God, we are to take action as a result of what it says and DO IT!

That brings us to a provoking question. In what way are we consistently being a doer of the Word of God? Ask God to allow His Word to come alive and spur you become a doer of the Word and not just a hearer.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

KEPT FROM EVIL! – John 17:15 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

KEPT FROM EVIL!

John 17:15 – Devotional

John 17:15

“I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You would keep them from the evil of the world.”

It literally sends chills up and down my spine to understand that Jesus actually prayed for each and every believer! As we read the words of this beautiful prayer of our Lord, it is awesome to remember that He has each of us written in the palm of His hand. Accept this mighty prayer in your behalf.

Jesus could have easily taken all of His disciples with Him when He ascended into heaven. He didn’t! Jesus had a plan and purpose for the disciples of His day as well as the believers of all ages.

Read today’s Scripture once more. Jesus has a plan and purpose for each believer. Some have been called to endure suffering and sacrifice, others a life of plenty in which to give to the work of ministry.

Things change rapidly and we will never know from moment to moment whether we will live or die for the Lord. There is one thing we can know for certain; He has prayed this prayer for you knowing every moment of your life. What are you doing for Him?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
