DRAW ME NEARER! – Luke 15:19-20 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

DRAW ME NEARER!

Luke 15:19-20 – Devotional

Luke 15:19-20

“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”

One of my most pleasurable jobs as a pastor is helping families restore broken relationships. I once was called upon to officiate at a funeral service. The son of the deceased told me that he had not spoken to his sister for years and wanted me to reconcile them before the service. Right! Just like that!

Less than an hour before the service I met with the two and their families. Each of them had children, spouses and others on their side. This son and his family were on one side of the aisle and his sister and her family on the other side. I had prayed for just the right words. I just started reading a Scripture. To this day cannot recall what I used. I had just finished reading when the brother stood and walked across the aisle and hugged his sister. The two families merged with great joy.

Fanny J. Crosby lived from 1820 to 1915. This remarkable lady never let problems keep her away from the Lord. Her blindness as an infant meant that she spent her entire life without physical sight, but was blessed with a keen spiritual sight.

When she was only eight years old she wrote the following poem: Oh, what a happy child I am, although I cannot see! I am resolved that in this world contented I will be! How many blessings I enjoy that other people do not! So weep or sigh because I am blind, I cannot – nor I will not. The hymn, Draw Me Nearer expresses her desire to draw nearer to her blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Draw Me Nearer

1. I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith And be closer drawn to Thee.

Refrain: Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the power of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope, And my will be lost in Thine.

Refrain: Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour, That before Thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend!

Refrain: Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know, Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach, Till I rest in peace with Thee.

Refrain: Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord, To Thy precious, bleeding side.

BE STANDOUT DOERS! – Luke 6:28 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

BE STANDOUT DOERS!

Luke 6:28 – Devotional

Luke 6:28

“Bless the ones who curse you and pray for the ones who hurt you.”

It is honorable to do good to those around us. We can probably recall times when we exchanged gifts and pleasantries with friends and co-workers. The sun shone and the birds sang. What a wonderful world!

Back to reality! Life is not usually lived in such glorious conditions. More often we find ourselves in disputes and conflicts that seem to arise from nowhere. Actually we know where their source comes from. The enemy of our souls has determined to make God’s children miserable. He uses his weapons of hate and deceit to cause strife and division.

As born-again believers of Christ, we have been delivered from the curse of eternal punishment, but that does not mean we will not be subject to the attacks of the enemy of our souls. Satan wants us to believe that he is in control, but Christ won the battle on the cross and we can live in victory!

The Lord wants us to be more than survivors. He wants us to cross life’s finish line with our hands raised in victory. The Lord wants us to be standout doers that have the grace to love those who hurt us by their words and actions. The Lord wants us to be standout doers of His will and of His way!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

LET THERE BE PEACE! – Psalm 57:5 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

LET THERE BE PEACE!

Psalm 57:5 – Devotional

Psalm 57:5

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Have you ever had people return from a trip and comment that God was with them and they had no trouble coming or going? Does that imply that if something had gone wrong that God was not with them? That’s something to think about, isn’t it?

I have had trips where I encountered unexpected difficulties. I didn’t relish those difficult times, but I could see the hand of God working. Pain and turmoil does not necessarily mean that God is not using us.

Job went through tremendous suffering and pain. The loss of all of his children, his wealth, and his health did not mean that God was not using him. Job has become the example for all of us that in the midst of the pain God is at work.

Joseph was another shining example of enduring pain for the sake of the Lord. Cast into a pit, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison was God’s way of placing him where he needed to be. When things go rough in our life we need not fear that God has forgotten us. Find His peace and live!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GOD’S PLANS FOR US! – 2 John 1:6 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

GOD’S PLANS FOR US!

2 John 1:6 – Devotional

2 John 1:6

“And this is love, that we walk after His commandments. This is the commandment, that, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.”

I can still recall the delight we had in watching our children take their first steps. There had been a period of days or even weeks when they stood beside a chair or when Joyce or I would hold onto them.

Then came that first faltering, even terrifying, first step into the unknown. They seemed to know that they were designed to be able to walk. As I write these words I am aware that there are those who through accident or lack of physical development have not been able to walk in the same way as others.

It is incredible that God has endowed those who trust in Him to develop other skills that at times make them more effective witnesses for Him than if they had the full use of their extremities.

God wants each of us to serve Him in a way that is unique to the way we find ourselves to be. Rather than trying to be like others, we need to be what God plans for us to be. Take time to ask Him what His plans are for you!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
