AT THE CROSS!

Hebrews 12:2 – Devotional

Hebrews 12:2

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

This week’s hymn was written over 300 years ago by Isaac Watts. It would be impossible to fully know the number of lives it has touched since he wrote it. One of those lives was the blind hymn writer, Fanny J. Crosby. In the autumn of 1850, revival meetings were being held in the Thirtieth Street Methodist Church in New York City.

Fanny and some of her friends attended each night and she craved for spiritual joy but could not find it. On the evening of November 20, 1850, it seemed to her that the light must indeed come then or never. After a prayer was offered, they began to sing this hymn. When they sang “Here Lord, I give myself away,” her soul was flooded with a celestial light. She realized what her problem had been. She realized that she had been trying to hold the world in one hand and the Lord in the other. She yielded to Him!

AT THE CROSS

1. Alas! and did my Savior bleed, And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head, For sinners such as I?

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

2. Was it for crimes that I had done, He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

3. Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died, For man the creature’s sin.

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

4. But drops of grief can ne’er repay, The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give myself away, ‘Tis all that I can do.

Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Are you like Fanny Crosby—looking for joy to fill your soul? Her answer is the answer—Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’Tis all that I can do.

LISTEN CAREFULLY! – Proverbs 5:7 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

LISTEN CAREFULLY!

Proverbs 5:7 – Devotional

Proverbs 5:7

“Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of My mouth.”

How do we listen carefully? I think the answer is in blocking out extraneous sounds that prevent us from hearing clearly what we want to hear. For music I find that headphones create an entirely new world of sound quality. Music that I enjoy without headphones bring enjoyment, but with the headphones I enter a whole new world of appreciation of the music.

In like manner when I study the Bible, I often am transfixed by reading chapter after chapter and finding new and glorious appreciation for the revelation of eternal truth. It stuns me that many believers neglect the thrill of discovering how our loving God desires a personal relationship with us!

I have come more and more to approach the study of God’s Word with quiet assurance that God is far more anxious to meet with me than I am with Him. How can it be that the God of the universe wants to spend time with the likes of me? Then I read that He even cares for the sparrows, so He also cares for each of us!

Listen carefully as the Lord will speak to you as you open the pages of your Bible (or listen to a recording of Scripture). God loves each of us enough to come in humanity and give Himself for our eternal salvation. LISTEN CAREFULLY!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing.

CONTROLLING CLUTTER! – Matthew 6:8 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

CONTROLLING CLUTTER!

Matthew 6:8 – Devotional

Matthew 6:8

“Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.”

My wife Joyce was an amazing person. She was always neat and organized. It seemed to be one of her greatest delights in our home to insure that everything was in its proper place … and then there was me! I seem to specialize in clutter.

Over the 62 years of our marriage, Joyce tried everything to control my clutter. The number of boxes, baskets, and cubbies she bought to help keep my clutter out of sight, or at least manageable, was astounding.

During the last years of Joyce’s life, she was not as concerned about clutter. Since her death in 2015 I have been on my own to control the household clutter and have become aware of a new reality about it. Oftentimes I think I’ll need a particular article later, so I “store” it beside my chair, on my desk, on the floor … you get the picture. Before long I have a mess that needs attention. It’s then I discover that most of my clutter was totally unnecessary to hold on to.

There are areas of our lives that may have eternal value, but are they covered up by the clutter we allow to accumulate. When we make the Lord the focus of our life, He alone can bring order out of chaos. He knows what we need and when we will need it!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing.

SEE YOU IN HEAVEN! – Philippians 1:21 Devotional

SEE YOU IN HEAVEN!

Philippians 1:21 – Devotional

Philippians 1:21

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

What is your attitude concerning our eternal home? I fear that all too many people live in a world of make-believe when it comes to making sure where they will spend eternity. It seems strange that people eagerly accept the idea of aliens from outer space, but scoff at the necessity of being born-again.

What a wonderful consolation it is for those of us who have repented and been born-again believers to know what is waiting for us. Heaven is a place and hell is also a place.

In order to arrive at the gates of hell it is not necessary to do anything. We are born in sin and that is our condemned condition unless we confess the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and invite Him into our heart.

When we stand beside the bedside of a loved one who is a believer, we can rest in the knowledge that there will be a great reunion when we all get to heaven. As we struggle through this vale of tears we can encourage those ready to meet the Lord with the words, “See you in heaven!” What wonderful comfort!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing.

THE RIGHT CHOICE! – Deuteronomy 30:19 Devotional

THE RIGHT CHOICE!

Deuteronomy 30:19 – Devotional

Deuteronomy 30:19

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: choose life, that both you and your seed may live.”

Here is a news flash: YOU CANNOT MAKE DECISIONS FOR PEOPLE! Frequently we parents wish we could somehow make the right decisions for our kids that would keep them free from harm and danger—but we can’t!

Way back in the 1960’s, when I was a Juvenile Probation Officer, I seemingly had the lives and future of these delinquents in my hands. It was an awesome responsibility. Repeatedly I would explain the consequences of their actions only to discover within a short time that they had been arrested yet again.

I have to admit that it would have been easy to give up on these kids, but often I was the only one who was on their side (even if they didn’t know it). I felt that God had placed me in a position to offer them a hope for their future.

Try as hard as I might there came a time when I had done all that was in my power to do. I had to let go and allow them to “sink or swim.” Some failed to swim!! We can do our best for those who God has allowed us to minister to, but there comes a time when we must leave the choice up to them!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing.
