HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

Psalm 29:2  –  Devotional

Psalm 29:2

“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

There have been times in my life when I have worked in dirt and grime. By the time I had finished my work it seemed that I had been coated with the filth. I could hardly wait to take a shower and clean myself up. In this sin sick world we often need to come near God’s cleansing shower and experience His holiness.

Reginald Heber was born on April 21, 1783 in Cheshire, England, to a heritage of wealth and culture. By the age of five, he had read the Bible so thoroughly that he could give chapter and verse for many chance quotations.

He composed many hymns, but served his entire life without seeing them published. It was only after his death that as many as 57 of his hymns were recognized. It was to the Lord that he dedicated his works. Such is the case with this week’s hymn, Holy, Holy, Holy!

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2. Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore Thee,
Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee,
Who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

3. Holy, holy, holy! tho’ the darkness hide Thee
Tho’ the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see;
Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee,
Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.

4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky, and sea;
Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

POUR IT IN! – Colossians 3:16-17 Devotional

POUR IT IN!

Colossians 3:16-17 –  Devotional

Colossians 3:16-17

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

In one of the churches I served I was helping to staff Bible classes. One teacher came with high credentials. After the first few weeks I was speaking with a man who attended that teacher’s class. He mentioned that when the Bible material was being taught it was like his head was opened and God’s Word was being poured in!

Wow! I thought that was the highest evaluation that could be given. I have so wanted to labor for the Lord in such a way that the hearts and minds of my hearers or readers would be opened and the pure Word of God poured in!

The first words of today’s Scripture seem to have this same concept: “Let the word of Christ dwell in you….” In order to have the Word of God dwell within us we must spend time in the Word.

How much time do we spend each day with the Bible? How much time do we spend each week? That gets pretty embarrassing doesn’t it? Some people go weeks or even months without reading their Bible.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

KNOW CHRIST FULLY! – Philippians 3:10 Devotional

KNOW CHRIST FULLY!

Philippians 3:10 –  Devotional

Philippians 3:10

“That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being made conformable unto His death.”

I have always enjoyed the song, “Because He Lives” written and performed by Bill and Gloria Gaither. As I recall it starts out like this: “God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus; He came to love, heal and forgive. He lived and died to buy my pardon, an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!”

Thank God we serve a Savior who is alive. 1. He always was alive! 2. He is alive right now making intercession for us. 3. He will always be alive as we spend eternity praising Him for His wonderful love!

Since Jesus has provided us with resurrection life, how should we then live? Paul gives us the answer in Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

We are not saved by doing good, but the fruit of resurrection life is seeing the good and doing it. It means doing good to the very ones who have hurt us in some way. The Christ filled life is seeing life as Jesus sees it. Ask yourself, “What would Jesus do?” Then do it!

DO NOT COVET! – Luke 12:15 Devotional

DO NOT COVET!

Luke 12:15 –  Devotional

Luke 12:15

“And He said unto them, ‘Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things which he possesses.’”

It is interesting to observe how people (including ourselves) are pretty content with what we possess until we see someone obtain something better. We can have joy over something trivial until someone has a trivial thing that is better. RIGHT!

Lack of contentment was displayed in the Garden of Eden when the serpent enticed Adam and Eve that there was better and God was unjust in not giving them that something better. In essence they were coveting God!

What thing or things around you are you coveting? Do you lack a spirit of contentment with what God has blessed you with? The carnal people of the world are always looking for the next best thing but seldom find contentment.

Jesus is always our answer! When we seek more of His presence in our life the less we will be drawn to things of the world. I think of the words of that song we used to sing; “Take the whole word, but give me Jesus!” DO NOT COVET!

Blessings dear heart! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

BORN SINNERS! – Psalm 56:5 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

BORN SINNERS!

Psalm 56:5 –  Devotional

Psalm 56:5

“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.”

In my photo collection is a small black and white photo. It is a little creased, wrinkled and faded (so am I). It is a photograph of me at about the age of four. I am dressed in shorts and casual shirt, standing on a wooden porch.

Even after so many decades I still remember that porch. I had slipped a butcher knife out of the kitchen drawer and sat on the porch whittling away on a piece of wood. Mom saw me and yelled for me to get that knife back in the house. I said I would, but I didn’t. After the second warning I quietly took the knife back in kitchen and then returned to the porch. I took a piece of shingle that was about the same size as the knife and acted like I was still carving.

Suddenly the cloud descended and my mother’s wrath poured down on me. I acted innocent and showed her that it was just a piece of shingle and I was doing nothing wrong. I was wrong and the seat of my pants felt the wrath of my mother whom I should have obeyed.

Even as adults we may try to act innocent when we sin, but in our heart of hearts we know that we have sinned and need forgiveness. Rather than to continue whittling away, we need to confess our sin and receive newness of life.

Blessings dear heart! Walk with God today and be a blessing!
