AMMUNITION AGAINST SIN!

Psalm 119:11 – Devotional

Psalm 119:11

“Your Word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.“

I seem to recall playing a game of hide and seek when I was a boy. It is getting harder and harder to recall anything that long ago, but times of fun and games are delightful morsels in my memory.

The discipline of memorizing God’s Word always produces rich dividends. It seems that each time I have memorized a portion of Scripture something occurs that causes that portion to come alive.

As I have grown older I find it harder to memorize God’s Word, but at the same time I find it more rewarding and a comforting. I have been rewarded every time I use God’s Word when I go to Him in prayer.

I encourage you to commit right now to memorize today’s Scripture from Psalm 119:11. This can be a verse you can take with you the rest of your life and into eternity. It certainly gives us a valid reason to hide His Word – IT IS POWERFUL AMMUNITION TO USE IN OUR BATTLE AGAINST SIN!

MAGNIFIED SHADOWS!

Psalm 23:4 – Devotional

Psalm 23:4

“Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and staff, they comfort me.“

Once I was about a block from my house and gliding along at about ten miles per hour when I noticed an eight-inch long shadow gliding along beside me on the pavement. It was then that I noticed a two-inch long insect flying next to the car. The sun was at just the right angle to magnify the shadow of the tiny insect.

When I replay that scene in my mind, I am reminded that shadows are always magnified and are larger than real life. The Psalmist reminds us that we travel through the valley of the shadow of death, not the valley of death.

What is the difference? The difference is that shadows are magnified. That means things we fear appear to be larger than life. Not only that, we have our Great Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who carries a rod and staff to rescue and protect us.

The next time you encounter the shadow of fear in your life, remember who is walking beside you. He knows how big the threat really is and He alone is able to shield and protect you.

EARLY RISER!

Psalm 113:3 – Devotional

Psalm 113:3

“From the rising of the sun to its going down the Lord’s name is to be praised.“

Our family made numerous road trips over the years and I developed the habit of starting very early in the morning. When I say “early in the morning,” I mean well before dawn. The lack of traffic in the early morning hours allows you to make much better time. It is almost like reducing the travel time.

I can recall on those trips watching the first hint that dawn was near. The eastern skyline gradually appeared out of the darkness and minute by minute it became more pronounced. Before long gorgeous colors began to emerge and you knew that dawn had arrived.

As we make our way through this sin-darkened world, it often seems as if we are being swallowed up in the inky blackness of depravity. It is during these times that we need to focus our attention on God’s eastern sky . . . dawn is about to break!

Keep your spirits up, dear hearts! In Psalm 30:5 we are reminded: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Never lose heart as you travel through these dark hours — dawn is very near.
