PURSUE KNOWLEDGE!

2 Peter 1:5-7 – Devotional

2 Peter 1:5-7

“But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self control, to self control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.”

Pride takes many forms. One of these is self-confidence.

We often believe we know what is right without taking the time to seek God‘s will and purpose for our actions.

Since the garden of Eden humans have listened to the whispers of Satan telling them they are able to make their own decisions without listening to God. The human mind is remarkable, but when it comes to knowing the right choices, we are at a loss.

We might agree that salvation of obtained by grace through faith. We follow that step by trying to live a virtuous life. Peter, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, says that after virtue we are to seek knowledge. That is what Solomon asked for when he became king of Israel following the death of his father David.

All through his reign, as well as the reign of the other leaders before and after, when they ask God for wisdom, God answered. When they acted in their own instincts, they failed.

The great question confronting each of us is whether we will accept God‘s knowledge as revealed in the Bible, or rely on our own abilities.

I choose to trust in the Lord and find godly knowledge.

Blessings dear hearts, walk with God today and be a blessing!

BE FOUND FAITHFUL! – 2 Peter 3:14 Devotional

BE FOUND FAITHFUL!

2 Peter 3:14 – Devotional

2 Peter 3:14

“Be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless.”

When we are called to our eternal home with the Lord, how will we be found by our precious Lord who gave us so much? I think that question has been on the heart and mind of every sincere follower of Christ.

Immediately I am reminded of the Scripture in Isaiah 64:6 “. . . all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” That is not encouraging to the self-help gurus who try to convince their followers that good works merit eternal reward. NOPE!

It is never by what we have done, are now doing, or will accomplish in the future, that will gain an entrance into God’s heaven. It is only by the shed blood of Christ are we saved, and only by His blood are we to be found faithful!

I desire to be found faithful in my service for the Lord when He calls me home. My desire (it really does not matter) is that I rise to meet Christ in the air at the rapture of the church. Regardless by death or by rapture I want to be found faithful in His sight!

Blessings dear hearts! May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

BE ON GUARD! – 2 Peter 3:11 Devotional

BE ON GUARD!

2 Peter 3:11 – Devotional

2 Peter 3:11

“Be on guard so you will not be carried away by the error of the lawless and be led away from your secure position.”

As a former city police officer and Air Force Combat Missile Commander, I know what it is to be on guard. I have spent many wakeful nights to insure others are safe in their beds. The threat of enemies is deterred by those who are constantly on guard.

It is an awesome responsibility to be placed in a position of trust. As a police officer I was able to break up family disputes and save business owners from losing their property to burglars. In the Air Force I stood ready to defend our nation in the event an enemy launched a missile toward our shores.

Spiritually, I feel the need to defend the inerrant Word of God against the relentless attacks of liberal theologians who feel a committee is able to set aside the absolutes of Scripture. Defending God’s Word is a responsibility each of us should assume.

The best way to defend the faith is to follow what this passage in 2 Peter 3:12 advises: “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” The more we study God’s Word and commune with Him in prayer, the more we will be able to stand guard.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

THE WAY OF BALAAM! – 2 Peter 2:15 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

THE WAY OF BALAAM!

2 Peter 2:15 – Devotional

2 Peter 2:15

“They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.”

A certain young man had a fervent desire to serve the Lord. For a time he was completely committed to obeying God’s Word without compromise. Then one day he was tempted to participate in a questionable activity. He knew it was not the right thing to do, but decided to pray about it. As he prayed he sensed that God was saying NO!

The young man waited several days and asked the Lord again and heard the Holy Spirit speak: No! He waited a few more days and again prayed. This time he heard the Holy Spirit whisper: No! Asking the same question a few days later he heard nothing, so he joyfully engaged in an activity that led him away from the Lord and into great heartache.

Mark this down: God does not change! If He says that something is contrary to His Word, will, and way—it will forever remain contrary to His Word, will, and way. It does not matter that some church council will approve sinful activity—if it is not in accordance with God’s Word, it is sin and will always be sin.

Our “do-as-you-feel-like-doing” society has torpedoed far too many believers. We must never allow the appeal of this world’s values to draw us away from God’s best for our life.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS! – 2 Peter 3:9b Devotional

THE OLD RUGGED CROSS!

2 Peter 3:9b – Devotional

2 Peter 3:9b

” . . . He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Janelle Hansen writes, “My grandfather was 6′ 2” with a big booming voice and the air of a man in control of his life. He loved his cigars (which he pronounced “ceeeeeegars”), Pinochle, and his oil field buddies, but he had no love for God for most of his life. He was raised by an itinerant Methodist preacher who also ran a home for unwed mothers and both those occupations embarrassed and angered him. All of my siblings and I prayed for him throughout our childhood that he would come to know the Lord, but it seemed like that would never happen.

“But, one Sunday morning in my sophomore year of college I got a call from my father who told me in tears that he had received a letter from his father (my grandfather) relaying that he had been listening to Billy Graham on the radio and when “The Old Rugged Cross” came on, he wept uncontrollably and finally gave his heart and life to God. My Grandfather was 72 years old that day. He lived another 10 years and then went to be with the Lord.

“Never give up praying for your unsaved loved ones. The Holy Spirit will keep working on them. “. . . He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9b).

“The picture you see here is of my grandfather singing in perfect tenor harmony around the dining room table with my family about 3 years before his homegoing.”
