PRIDE TO PITY!

2 Chronicles 26:16 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 26:16

“After Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.”

In Scripture there are two wonderful examples of men whose hearts stayed true to the Lord throughout their lives – – Joseph and Daniel. It was because of their humility. Regrettably, there are many examples in the Bible who started out as God’s heroes, but ended up as God’s zeroes. It was because of their pride. Consider Saul and Samson. Sadly, we must include Uzziah.

As long as Uzziah sought the Lord, he was able to be God’s man in leading Judah to subdue her enemies. But somewhere along the line, he began to think that it was his own ability that brought victory. That is always the beginning of the end for anyone. His success caused him to take his eyes off of the Lord and on himself. Let’s face it – -He blew it!

Our modern-day church scene is littered by the wreckage of ministers who started out with humility and total commitment to the Lord, but came to destruction when they grew popular and failed to rely totally on the Lord.

I have no idea what was in Uzziah’s mind when he entered the temple to offer incense to the Lord. I do know the consequences of his action—leprosy! Failing to rely on the Lord doomed him to a life of humiliation and separation. You have to feel sorry for this man who started with such great promise, but ended with such shame—FROM PRIDE TO PITY!

Blessings dear hearts walk with God today and become a blessing!

REVIVE US AGAIN! – 2 Chronicles 7:14 Devotional

REVIVE US AGAIN!

2 Chronicles 7:14 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Back in the 70’s, I was an associate pastor of a large church. One Sunday, just before the service an elderly lady collapsed in the aisle near the rear of the church. I was just entering and observed one of our members, a medical doctor, doing chest compressions on the little lady.

When he saw me, he immediately called me over and told me to take over while he checked her for vital signs. It was the first and only time I have ever felt my hands repeatedly crush down on a person’s chest to keep the heart pumping blood throughout the body. It is an awesome and fearful experience. (By-the-way, the lady survived this traumatic ordeal after a few days in the hospital.)

There are people around us who seem to be in spiritual cardiac arrest. We see them stagger and collapse. The question is how we are going to respond. Do we wring our hands and cluck our tongue, or do we dive in to give spiritual restoration? Today’s Scripture provides the steps to revival. Back in 1863, William P. Mackey wrote the words to this week’s hymn.

Revive Us Again

We praise Thee, O God! For the Son of Thy love,
For Jesus Who died, And is now gone above.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

We praise Thee, O God! For Thy Spirit of light,
Who hath shown us our Savior, And scattered our night.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

All glory and praise! To the Lamb that was slain,
Who hath borne all our sins, And hath cleansed every stain.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

All glory and praise! To the God of all grace,
Who hast brought us, and sought us, And guided our ways.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

Revive us again; Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled, With fire from above.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

GOD’S CONDITIONAL CLAUSE!

2 Chronicles 7:14 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Over the years I have stood before interview boards that were in the process of interviewing me for a particular position or promotion. They were the ones who were placing before me the conditions that were to be expected. I was the one who would be expected to comply.

Many times we read about those individuals who have a “foxhole commitment.” They try to place conditions on the Lord, promising to follow Him IF He will get them out of their current predicament. (That “commitment” is not always restricted to wartime battle conditions. We are prone to pray that type of prayer in all sorts of situations.)

We see that today’s Scripture is addressed to believers. Oh, and might I add there is a conditional clause attached to it. We are God’s people and we are the ones who must humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways. I pray we will respond in a positive way to God’s CONDITIONAL CLAUSE!

Blessings dear hearts! Walk with God today and be a blessing!

THE DOWNFALL OF PRIDE!

2 Chronicles 26:16 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 26:16

“But when he was strong, his heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the Lord his God, and went into the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense.

Many characters in the Bible started out as God’s heroes, but they ended up as zeroes because of their pride. Unfortunately, Uzziah was one of those.

As long as he sought the Lord, Uzziah was able to subdue his enemies and be God’s man to lead Judah in subduing her enemies. Somewhere along the line he began to think that it was his own ability that brought victory. That is always the beginning of the end for anyone.

Uzziah did not become full of pride until he had become powerful. His success caused him to take his eyes off the Lord and become proud of himself. Sadly, we will never know all that Uzziah could have accomplished if he had remained dependent upon the Lord. We do know that he blew it!

So what was Uzziah’s sin? He presumed on God’s holiness. What does that mean? It means that he felt that he was above God’s Word and that he was exempt from what it demanded. Doing things his way, not God’s way, doomed him to a life of leprosy, humiliation, and separation—FROM PRIDE TO PITY.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
