A CLEAN HEART!

Psalm 51:10 – Devotional

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.“

Many years ago I attended an Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts, held in Seattle. At the last session each attendee was given a small button with the letters; PBPGINFWMY. It stood for; PLEASE BE PATIENT, GOD IS NOT FINISHED WITH ME YET! I liked it then and I like it now.

Sometimes spiritual leaders give the impression that they are so holy, that they dine with the angels. The truth of the matter is that we simply like angel food cake, we don’t dine with them. None of us are perfect and I think spiritual leaders need to be more open in sharing our failures. We need times of humiliation to be mind joggers that we are still under construction. I think it is safe to say that we will always be under construction.

I heard an evangelist years ago, tell of a woman who approached him after a service and mentioned that she thought he was very mature. He rushed home and looked up the word mature, so he would be better able to enjoy its depth of meaning. To his dismay, the definition said; “ripe and getting rotten.” Ooops!

Never stop the construction process. In doing God’s work there is no such thing as retirement. Keep a clean heart and keep doing the work of the Lord. God is still at work and will continue as long as we maintain a clean and steadfast spirit!

THE FRUIT OF WORRY!

Matthew 6:33-34 – Devotional

Matthew 6:33-34

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.“

Worry produces bitter fruit. Try to recall the times that you have worn yourself out worrying about something only to realize that you really didn’t need to worry about it. There were other times when pain and suffering came so unexpectedly that you had no time to worry about it. So why worry?!

There’s another passage of Scripture in the same sermon that Jesus shared with the people on the Mount. It is found in Matthew 6 verse 27; “Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?” The answer to this question of course is that no one can profit by worrying. So why worry!

The alternative to worry is to obey the command of our Lord. And what is that command? We read it very plain in verse 23. We are to seek God’s kingdom and his righteousness before anything else. Before we worry, before we fret, before we stew, before we lose sleep, we seek to know and experience God and his fullness.

The next time you are prone to worry I urge you immediately to stop and begin quoting every Scripture that you have ever memorized. If you have not memorized any carry a little 3 x 5 card with some meaningful Scripture on it. Feast on it do not worry about the details of life!

A FAITHFUL PROMISE!

Psalm 51:10

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.“

Have you ever wondered who you can rely upon to do what they have promised to do? Let me ask another, more-penetrating question. Have you ever made a commitment to pray for someone and after days, weeks, or even months, later realize that you have failed to follow through? You have betrayed your trust, my friend!

It is a serious thing to fail to fulfill your promise to those around you, but what about the promises you have made to the Lord but that you have failed to keep? I must confess that there have been times I have had to hang my head in shame for not doing as I promised. I have had to ask the Lord to forgive my failure.

It is easy to see the faults of others while at the same time ignoring my own shortcomings. It is very evident that more easily we find fault in others the easier it is to ignore our own failures. May God forgive us!

There have been many times that people have disappointed me by saying one thing and then doing another. It hurt and made me feel betrayed. I want to make a new commitment not be guilty of the same failure. I commit to take my prayer burdens to the foot of the cross and entrust them to the Lord.
