OUR NEAREST FRIEND!

Proverbs 18:24 – Devotional

Proverbs 18:24

“To have a friend a person must them self be friendly,
thankfully there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.“

Being alone is a sad and dismal situation. We really do need each other and a friend is one of the greatest possessions we can have. It is a sad and poor person who has no friends. Friends are different from companions. Companions are simply close by, but are not emotionally close so we can share our deepest feelings.

When I resigned as pastor in Burns, Oregon, a close friend, Chris Vosler, gave me a plaque and a card. The plaque reads: A friend is one who knows you as you are, understands where you’ve been, accepts who you’ve become, and still gently invites you to grow. The card reads: Cecil, Thanks for being that friend. Chris.

As close as our dearest friends may be, we have a friend who is still closer. I am speaking of the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the One who is with us at all times. When we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, He is there beside us. When we receive devastating news, He is there to provide the comfort and solace to ease the pain. When we receive news that calls for rejoicing, He makes it even better for He rejoices with us. At all times and in every circumstance, our dearest Friend makes our life worth living.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

A SAFE PLACE!

Matthew 11:28-30 – Devotional

Matthew 11:28-30

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.“

It seems that our lives are filled with threatening situations of every description. Every new medication comes with a list of side effects that seems worse than the condition the medicine is designed to treat.

When we watch the latest news reports, we discover threats of every kind. Even the weather reports tend to lead to feelings of dread and gloom. Some, seeking to find a safe place, have left civilization for a life of isolation only to find themselves confronted by wild beasts. There just seems to be no safe place to which we can escape the ravages of our world.

Reading the histories of the suffering saints of God across the ages reveals that this world never has been a safe place. The Old Testament is full of war and strife that in a way appears more violent than our modern age.

The answer is to be found in the gentle words we discover in this passage from Matthew 11:28-30. The Lord promises rest and peace in the midst of the storms of life. When we surrender to Him and His will for our life, we find our very own SAFE PLACE. It is our haven from the storms of life.
