LIFE AMONG DEATH!

Romans 6:23 – Devotional

Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Over the years I have officiated at hundreds of funeral services, some of them for members of my own family, others for members of my congregation. There are others where I officiated at the request of the funeral home. The small church that I pastor even holds services at a local funeral home.

Several weeks ago I was entering the funeral home through the employee’s door and happened to glance up to the alcove above the door. I could see a bird’s nest and the head of a small swallow. It was a mother hatching her clutch of eggs. The following week there were several tiny heads visible in the nest. Her eggs had hatched! In only a few days they were all gone.

Last Sunday I was entering through that door again and looked up to the nest. There was the mother swallow’s head again. Another clutch of eggs were soon to be hatched to enter the world of soaring high and catching insects.

The swallows have made me aware that in this funeral home that has witnessed many tears at the passing of loved ones, there is also new birth and life. For those of us who have been born again, a funeral home is not just a place of death, but a time to celebrate the entry into a life that will never end. Life among death!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

LOOKING FORWARD! – Philippians 3:13b Devotional

LOOKING FORWARD!

Philippians 3:13b – Devotional

Philippians 3:13b

” – – forgetting those things that are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead.”

After being freed from the bondage of slavery, Moses sent out twelve spies. Only two returned with a positive report and urged them to go in immediately to possess the land God had given them. One of those two spies was Joshua, the other was Caleb. Upon the death of Moses, Joshua sends out only two spies to Jericho.

Let’s consider a sinner that is introduced in the book of Joshua. Her name was Rahab. She was a foreigner and a prostitute. But she was ready to accept the God who loved her just as she was!

Rahab and her family were spared when Israel defeated Jericho. She did not look back on her sordid past. She took a risk to save the Israelites and God blessed her for it. In Hebrews 11:31, she is mentioned along with the faithful of the ages. In James 2:25-26 she is considered righteous in the eyes of God.

When God’s Word says our sins are forgiven, does that mean we are free or do we carry the terrible burden of sin with us? I fear that there are many who actually receive God’s forgiveness but fail to recognize that He also cleanses (1 John 1:9).

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

REVIVE US AGAIN! – 2 Chronicles 7:14 Devotional

REVIVE US AGAIN!

2 Chronicles 7:14 – Devotional

2 Chronicles 7:14

“If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Back in the 70’s, I was an associate pastor of a large church. One Sunday, just before the service an elderly lady collapsed in the aisle near the rear of the church. I was just entering and observed one of our members, a medical doctor, doing chest compressions on the little lady.

When he saw me, he immediately called me over and told me to take over while he checked her for vital signs. It was the first and only time I have ever felt my hands repeatedly crush down on a person’s chest to keep the heart pumping blood throughout the body. It is an awesome and fearful experience. (By-the-way, the lady survived this traumatic ordeal after a few days in the hospital.)

There are people around us who seem to be in spiritual cardiac arrest. We see them stagger and collapse. The question is how we are going to respond. Do we wring our hands and cluck our tongue, or do we dive in to give spiritual restoration? Today’s Scripture provides the steps to revival. Back in 1863, William P. Mackey wrote the words to this week’s hymn.

Revive Us Again

We praise Thee, O God! For the Son of Thy love,
For Jesus Who died, And is now gone above.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

We praise Thee, O God! For Thy Spirit of light,
Who hath shown us our Savior, And scattered our night.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

All glory and praise! To the Lamb that was slain,
Who hath borne all our sins, And hath cleansed every stain.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

All glory and praise! To the God of all grace,
Who hast brought us, and sought us, And guided our ways.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.

Revive us again; Fill each heart with Thy love;
May each soul be rekindled, With fire from above.

Refrain: Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Hallelujah! Amen.
Hallelujah! Thine the glory. Revive us again.
