A DAY TO REMEMBER!

Deuteronomy 32:1-2 – Devotional

Deuteronomy 32:1-2

“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. Let my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distill as the dew, as raindrops on the tender herb, and as showers on the grass.”

Stop for just a moment and remember the days which are now past. In one sense we can never re-live our yesterdays, but we can certainly learn from them. The date of May 26, 2025, is the day that has been chosen as Memorial Day here in the United States.

Having spent over twelve years in the military service, I know what it is like to lose comrades in arms. I vividly recall one Air Force pilot that was an instructor when I was in Officer Training School. He was enthusiastic and full of real life stories about his experiences in the cockpit of a jet aircraft. A few months after I had graduated, the word was received that he had been killed in combat.

This holiday has been established to honor the service men and women of all wars. It has been expanded as a time to remember all those loved ones who have died. As we drive through many cemeteries on this day, we see more flowers and flags than at any other time of year.

Memorial Day is a day to remember. It is a day of solemn contemplation about what has gone before us.

I like to think of the tremendous sacrifice Jesus made in order to give us salvation and a new birth. Some have called salvation a free gift from God. It is that indeed, but it cost Jesus His life. He died that we might have life abundant and free. As with any other gift, it must be received. It is not something we can earn. We either accept it or refuse it. There is no better day that we can appreciate God’s wonderful gift than on this day!

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a blessing!

THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD! – Hebrews 13:11-16 Devotional

THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD!

Hebrews 13:11-16 – Devotional

Hebrews 13:11-16

Under the old system, the high priest brought the blood of animals into the Holy Place as a sacrifice for sin, and the bodies of the animals were burned outside the camp. So also Jesus suffered and died outside the city gates to make his people holy by means of his own blood. So let us go out to him, outside the camp, and bear the disgrace he bore. For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.

Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to his name. And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

In the Old Testament, Gilead was the name of the mountainous region east of the Jordan River. This region was known for having skillful physicians and an ointment made from the gum of a tree particular to that area. Many believed that this balm had miraculous powers to heal the body.

In the book of Jeremiah, God tells the people of Israel that though many believe in the mysterious healing power of this balm, they can’t trust in those powers for spiritual healing or as a relief of their oppression. He reminds them that He is ultimately in control, and only He can relieve their suffering.

In the New Testament, God answers the suffering of His people by sending His own son to take our place. Jesus becomes our “Balm in Gilead.” It is Him we are called to turn to in our times of trial for healing and comfort.

We sing this song with that assurance: no matter our hardships or supposed shortcomings, Jesus loves us enough to take our suffering upon Himself.

THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD

There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole,
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.

Sometimes I feel discouraged
and think my work’s in vain,
but then the Holy Spirit
revives my soul again.

There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole,
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.

If you cannot preach like Peter,
if you cannot pray like Paul,
you can tell the love of Jesus
and say, “He died for all.”

There is a balm in Gilead
to make the wounded whole,
there is a balm in Gilead
to heal the sin-sick soul.

BE THE SALT! – Mark 9:50b Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

BE THE SALT!

Mark 9:50b – Devotional

Mark 9:50b

“Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another.”

Salt across the centuries has had many uses. It was used to preserve and season foods and for its medicinal qualities. In Roman times the soldiers were paid in salt. That is where the word salary came from. When you hear the expression “he’s not worth his salt” it refers to the payment in salt that was received.

I once heard a preacher use a wonderful illustration. He said something like this: “While it is true that you can lead a horse to water, you can’t make him drink — but you can salt his oats!” I cannot begin to tell you the number of times I have thought of that illustration since first hearing it.

Some of us in Christian ministry wear ourselves out trying to force people to drink when they show no inclination to want to drink. We may even heap on guilt or dire predictions of consequences, but there are still no slurping sounds.

What is the answer? SALT THE OATS! Right! How do we do that? We do it by creating a desire for more of the reality of God’s Word. Are we salting the oats of those we minister to? Are we creating such a desire that people thirst to drink from God’s well that never runs dry?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
