PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY! – Jeremiah 29:11-13 Devotional

PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY!

Jeremiah 29:11-13 – Devotional

Jeremiah 29:11-13

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart.”

I would dare to say that almost all of us have experienced some sort of trial in our life. It could be the loss of health, a financial meltdown, death of a mate or child or any number of catastrophic events. It is not whether or not we will encounter these trials, but rather what we will do when they arise.

The phrase, Praise to the Lord occurs in at least 155 verses in the Bible. That indicates to me that we need to spend far more time praising the Lord than we do. It would be well to replace our complaints with words of praise to the Lord.

Over 300 years ago, Joachim Neander was a hymn writer for the German Reform church. He was going through a time of trial and testing in his life. He would take long walks and pour his heart out to the Lord. It was on one of these walks that he came to the realization that it was not his strength that would give him victory and peace, but rather the powerful God he served. It was in that state of mind that he composed this week’s featured hymn.

PRAISE TO THE LORD, THE ALMIGHTY

1. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation!
All ye who hear, Now to His temple draw near;
Join me in glad adoration!

2. Praise to the Lord, who over all things so wondrously reigneth,
Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth!
Hast thou not seen how thy desires ever have been
Granted in what He ordaineth?

3. Praise to the Lord, who with marvelous wisdom hath made thee!
Decked thee with health, and with loving hand guided and stayed Thee.
How oft in grief hath not He bought thee relief,
Spreading His wings for to shade thee!

4. Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him!
Let the Amen sound from His people again;
Gladly for aye we adore Him.

GOD’S DEPENDABLE PEOPLE! – Isaiah 29:13 Devotional

GOD’S DEPENDABLE PEOPLE!

Isaiah 29:13 – Devotional

Isaiah 29:13

“These people come near to Me with their mouth and honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me. Their worship of Me is made up only of rules taught by men.”

It seems that in our modern world, people are searching for someone who will be faithful regardless of the circumstances. It seems that such dependable people are becoming harder and harder to find.

If that is true for our relationships, think about what God is confronted with. Sadly God has many wishy-washy believers who are more interested in their own welfare than in faithfully serving Him. Their attitude seems to be: “What’s in it for me?”

In today’s Scripture, Isaiah, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit writes about such double-minded people. They talk a good talk, but when it comes to putting their life on the line for the Lord, they fall short.

God wants followers who are willing to put their life on the line. A few days before the family was arrested by the Gestapo for hiding Jews, Corrie Ten Boom’s father commented; “If I am arrested for working to rescue God’s people, I would count it an honor.” That is the kind of reality I want in my life!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

OUR REAL HOME! – 2 Corinthians 5:1 Devotional

Hear Pastor Cecil read today's Evotional

OUR REAL HOME!

2 Corinthians 5:1 – Devotional

2 Corinthians 5:1

“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.”

I think it is safe to say that most of us have had close calls with death. I have listened to stories of deep sea fishermen and pilots that made me wonder how they escaped death. Even those who are the most cautious about taking risks can recall a near miss. My past experience in law enforcement and the military at times brought me close to eternity.

The apostle Paul was a tent-maker by trade. I can almost visualize his calloused fingers and hands. In today’s Scripture, Paul uses his profession as a tent-maker to illustrate a spiritual truth: This human body of ours is not going to survive. There are those who try to reverse the aging process in various ways, but nothing is going to keep us from coming to the end of our life and entering eternity.

It is sad that most of us spend too much time and effort on things that will pass away. By spending so much time on earthly things, we neglect the things that really count—those things that have eternal value. Receiving Christ as our personal Savior is vital to prepare for eternity. Spending time with God in prayer and reading His Word will prepare us for that heavenly home that will never pass away. Which home are you spending your time and effort to build?

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
