I WONDER AS I WANDER!

Isaiah 40:3-5 – Devotional

Isaiah 40:3-57

“A voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.’”

“I Wonder As I Wander” is a hymn written by folklorist John Jacob Niles (1892-1980), based on a song fragment he heard while traveling in the southern Appalachians.

Niles derived the germ of the song from Annie Morgan, the young daughter of a traveling evangelist, in Murphy, North Carolina, in 1933. He then composed a complete folk song that he performed while accompanying himself on the dulcimer.

I Wonder As I Wander by John Jacob Niles

I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus the Savior did come for to die.
For poor on’ry people like you and like I…
I wonder as I wander out under the sky.

When Mary birthed Jesus ’twas in a cow’s stall,
With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all.
But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall,
And the promise of ages it then did recall.

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing,
A star in the sky, or a bird on the wing,
Or all of God’s angels in heav’n for to sing,
He surely could have it, ’cause he was the King.

I wonder as I wander out under the sky,
How Jesus the Savior did come for to die.
For poor on’ry people like you and like I…
I wonder as I wander out under the sky.

ENLARGE MY MISSION! – 1 Chronicles 4:10 Devotional

ENLARGE MY MISSION!

1 Chronicles 4:10 – Devotional

1 Chronicles 4:10

“Oh that Thou would bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou would keep me from doing evil!

Have you ever poured out your heart to the Lord asking that He enlarge your territories? Are you content to quietly creep toward retirement when you could be catapulted into creative ministry?

From time to time people I run into, friends that I have not seen for awhile, and they ask me how I am enjoying retirement. I have to laugh since I am more active in ministry now than at any time in my entire ministry.

Many years ago I began to pray this prayer of Jabez for enlarged territory. I cannot begin to describe how the Lord has answered–not only has He given me a worldwide ministry, He keeps opening new doors.

I challenge you to join me in praying this prayer of Jabez. Let the Lord give you a unique ministry that will be designed by Him just for you. I can assure you right now that God is anxious to answer your prayer!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

GOD’S CHECKLIST? – Joshua 1:6-8 Devotional

GOD’S CHECKLIST?

Joshua 1:6-8 – Devotional

Joshua 1:6-8

“Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law My servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.

Many of you know that I am fascinated by the space program. It is a delight to watch flights of the Space Shuttle from the time of its lift-off until touchdown. But throughout the mission there is a function that might completely by-pass most people, but it is of particular interest to me—the checklist!

In my colorful past, I once was a missile launch control officer for the Minuteman Missile program. Each of our capsules controlled ten missiles. Our control centers were located deep underground and over ten miles from even the closest missile.

Before we were ever allowed to serve as a missile crew member, we had to go through a considerable amount of training. We also had to spend time in a training capsule that simulated the real thing. Through all of this training we had to learn to follow the checklist. Each crew member carried a large briefcase with our checklist notebooks. We were never allowed to do things on our own, but always did things in sequence and checked them off the list.

As I watch the space crew on the shuttle and the space station, I notice that they are always following their own checklists. Many times you will hear the controllers on ground calling out pages and numbers for them to take actions in the correct order.

In today’s Scripture, God is speaking directly to Joshua about his new position as leader of the Israelites. He is not to rely upon his experience of serving as an assistant to Moses, but rather rely upon the law which Moses wrote down and left for Joshua. It was not simply Moses’ words, but the inspired words which God gave for him to write.

The Lord is saying to Joshua—Follow the checklist! Let’s take a little visit to the list God gave Joshua:

_____ 1. “Be strong and very courageous.” Things may seem to be threatening and overwhelming, but we read the checklist and see that we are to react with His strength and our courage to believe what God says, not simply what we see.

_____ 2. “Be careful to obey all the law My servant Moses gave you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left.” Not part of God’s law, but all of His law. It is not a selective process, a pick and choose which of His laws we will obey. We are to have a totally obedient heart.

_____ 3. “Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth.” Not only are we to read God’s Word and obey it, we are to make it a part of our conversation.

_____ 4. “Meditate on it day and night.” It is impossible to meditate upon God’s Word if we have not spent time reading and studying it.

You will notice that I left spaces at the beginning of each item to check. How many of them can you check off on a daily basis? As a motivation, look at what God promises for following His checklist: “That you may be successful wherever you go… then you will be prosperous and successful.”

God has provided us with checklists throughout His Word. May we be careful to obey and check them off!

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today. Trust Him completely and be a blessing.

WORDS AND THOUGHTS! – Psalm 19:14 Devotional

WORDS AND THOUGHTS!

Psalm 19:14 – Devotional

Psalm 19:14

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

Over the years I have made it my practice to end my day by reading from the Book of Psalms. It always reminds me of reading aloud to my eldest daughter as she was in her hospital bed and near the end of her life here on earth.

The sure confidence it gave to both of us was that there was nothing to fear when we come to the end of our days here on earth. It is sad that so many people spend all of their time and effort on things that are of this world and will pass away.

One of my thoughts as I read God’s Word is that our spiritual life has far more importance than the fleeting things of this world. Day after day we encounter people who seem to have an abundance of this worlds goods, but lack the confident assurance that their name is written in God’s Book of Life!

Be sure you have invited Jesus to come into your heart and given you hope that is eternal. Let our words and thoughts focus on what God has prepared for us!

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!

ALWAYS FORGIVE OTHERS! – Colossians 3:13b Devotional

ALWAYS FORGIVE OTHERS!

Colossians 3:13b – Devotional

Colossians 3:13b

“Forbear one another, and forgive one another, if anyone has a quarrel against another: even as Christ forgave you, so you do also.

When we think of having an attitude of forgiveness, sadly it is most often when we feel that the other person deserves to be forgiven. In reality we receive a blessing or are about to receive one and therefore we give thanks. It is for what makes us feel justified and satisfied.

In today’s scripture, Paul rejoices in the report he has received about what God is doing for the Colossians. His rejoicing comes when he receives reports of how God’s people are freely radiating a forgiving spirit for all.

It causes me to stop and consider what my spiritual life lacks. Am I consistently thanking the Lord for the way other believers are growing in the Lord and the work they are doing for Him? I think I need to refocus my prayers to always thank God.

I want to take this opportunity to thank my many faithful readers around the world who have supported this ministry with your prayers and gifts. God has opened doors to reach thousands that need to be encouraged. I covet your continued prayer support and messages of encouragement.

May God richly bless you as you bless others by your words and actions!
