IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL!

Psalm 107:29-30 – Devotional

Psalm 107:29-30

“The LORD calms the storm, so that the waves are still. They are glad because they are quiet. He guides them to their desired haven.”

 

It seems that each of us is called upon to face storms in our life. It may be physical infirmity, financial reversals or the loss of a loved one. It is not the storm that matters, but how we react to the storm.

Back in 1873, Horatio Spafford and his family were scheduled to sail from New York to England where he was to assist the great evangelist, D.L. Moody. Because of a last minute business crisis Mr. Spafford sent his family on ahead and he would follow on a later ship.

Unfortunately the ship his family was sailing on collided with another ship and sank. There was a terrible loss of life, including the Spafford’s four daughters. It was nine days after the tragedy that Horatio Spafford received a cable from his wife that simply said, “Saved alone.” What poignant words.

Later, as he was sailing to meet his wife in England Horatio Spafford asked the captain of his ship to let him know when they were near where the accident had occurred. It was there that he penned the words of this beautiful hymn; It Is Well with My Soul.

SPIRITUAL FRUIT!

Galatians 5:22-23 – Devotional

Galatians 5:22-23

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, against such there is no law.

In the northern hemisphere it is that special time of year when the fruit ripens on the trees, sweet, delicious, and ready to eat. It makes my mouth water just thinking of a perfectly ripe and juicy peach! However, in just a few short weeks the weather will turn bitterly cold and throughout the months of winter, the trees that now produce such tasty fruit will stand stark, bare, and naked of its delicious produce.

In contrast, God promises us the fruit of the Spirit that never passes away! The fruit that we read about in today’s Scripture is a fruit that meets the deepest needs of the human soul. It is fruit that produces life.

Years ago I was teaching a Sociology class at Boise State University, with about 120 bored and indifferent students staring at me. I gave them their first assignment. They were to write the three things they desired most in their life and why. There were a few ridiculous answers, but a wide majority listed the first three fruits of the Spirit: LOVE, JOY, PEACE.

The fruit that God promises will always produce comfort and healing to ourselves as well as others. Seek after God’s eternally fresh fruit!

GOD’S PROFITABLE WORD!

2 Timothy 3:16 – Devotional

2 Timothy 3:16

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

Buffet restaurants are popular places to eat because there are so many food choices available. The problem is that there are so many options that it is common to eat more than is appropriate. Digestive misery is the result!

In the case of God’s Word, too many people seem to feel that they are permitted to select only the portions that they find agreeable and reject the remainder. Today’s passage dispels that line of thought. We are told that ALL Scripture is the inspired (God breathed) Word of God.

If all Scripture is given by God, we need to refuse to listen to those who choose to present only the portions they like and reject the rest. Paul goes even further when instructing his son in the faith, Timothy, the purpose of Scripture: It is for doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness.

Notice that it is only as these attributes are applied that the spiritually mature individual will be completely equipped for every good work. Are you faithful in applying God’s Word to your life? Remember His purpose for Scripture.

OUR REASON FOR LIVING!

Philippians 1:21 – Devotional

Philippians 1:21

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

A proud father was introducing his four-year-old daughter to his boss, the Mayor of the city. The young girl was known to be precocious, but her father thought she would be awed as she was introduced to this high city official.

As the Mayor bowed down and politely extended his hand to the young girl, he said, “Hi, I am the Mayor.” The young girl looked straight into his eyes and asked, “Why?” The Mayor was stunned to silence by the question and quickly moved on to the next group of constituents.

Back in his office the Mayor mulled over the girl’s innocent question. He was a Christian and was left to ponder the wisdom that this young child had confronted him with. Why was he doing the things he did? He always tried to be the best person and the best Mayor he could be, but was that enough?

As he bowed and began to pray, Philippians 1:21 entered his memory. That was the answer! He had to live for Christ in the words he spoke and in the things he did. In that quiet moment in his office, the Mayor determined that he would have an answer to why he did what he did . . . it would be to honor and glorify Jesus. Why do you do the things you do?
