{"id":7073,"date":"2019-08-23T06:00:44","date_gmt":"2019-08-23T13:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/devonline.us\/daily-e-votional\/?p=7073"},"modified":"2019-08-23T15:00:03","modified_gmt":"2019-08-23T22:00:03","slug":"at-the-cross-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyevotional.com\/prior2020\/at-the-cross-7\/","title":{"rendered":"AT THE CROSS!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Hebrews 12:1-2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"color: #c40000;\"><strong><em>\u201cTherefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares\u00a0us,\u00a0and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of\u00a0our\u00a0faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s hymn was written over 300 years ago by Isaac Watts. It would be impossible to fully know the number of lives it has touched since he wrote it. One of those lives was the blind hymn writer, Fanny J. Crosby.\u00a0In the autumn of 1850 re\u00adviv\u00adal meet\u00adings were be\u00ading held in the Thir\u00adti\u00adeth Street Meth\u00adod\u00adist Church in New York Ci\u00adty.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fanny and some of her friends attended each night and she craved for spiritual joy, but could not find it. On the evening of No\u00advem\u00adber 20, 1850, it seemed to her that the light must in\u00addeed come then or ne\u00adver. A\u00adfter a prayer was of\u00adfered, they be\u00adgan to sing this hymn. When they sang \u201c<em>Here Lord, I give my\u00adself away<\/em>,\u201d her soul was flood\u00aded with a ce\u00adles\u00adti\u00adal light. She realized what her problem had been. She real\u00adized that she had been try\u00ading to hold the world in one hand and the Lord in the other.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><u>AT THE CROSS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Alas! and did my Savior bleed, And did my Sovereign die?<br \/>\nWould He devote that sacred head, For sinners such as I?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,<br \/>\nAnd now I am happy all the day!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Was it for crimes that I had done, He groaned upon the tree?<br \/>\nAmazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,<br \/>\nAnd now I am happy all the day!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in,<br \/>\nWhen Christ, the mighty Maker died, For man the creature\u2019s sin.<\/em><strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,<br \/>\nAnd now I am happy all the day!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>But drops of grief can ne\u2019er repay, The debt of love I owe:<br \/>\nHere, Lord, I give myself away, \u2018Tis all that I can do.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Refrain: At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight,<br \/>\nAnd now I am happy all the day!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you like Fanny Crosby\u2014looking for joy to fill your soul?
