Philippians 1:21<\/strong><\/p>\n

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

During a time that history calls the “Dark Ages” the church was in confusion. Christianity had become degenerate and corrupt. Moral standards of the people were a disgrace and shame. But God always has for Himself a remnant of true believers. One of those was Bernard of Clairvaux of the Cistercian monastic order.<\/p>\n

He was still guilty of many of the errors of his day, having played a prominent role in the Second Crusade. But even Luther said of him, “Bernard is superior to all the doctors in his sermons even to Augustine himself, because he preaches Christ most excellently.”<\/p>\n

It was this man that God used to pen the words to some devotional poems that have become some of our finest hymns, “O Sacred Head Now Wounded;” “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hears;” and today’s hymn “Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee.”<\/p>\n

“Jesus, the Very Thought of Thee<\/a>“<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus! the very thought of Thee
\nwith sweetness fills my breast:
\nBut sweeter far Thy face to see,
\nand in Thy presence rest.<\/em><\/p>\n

No voice can sing, no heart can frame,
\nnor can the mem’ry find
\nA sweeter sound than Jesus name,
\nthe Savior of mankind.<\/em><\/p>\n

O hope of every contrite heart,
\nO joy of all the meek,
\nTo those who ask, how kind Thou art!
\nHow good to those who seek!<\/em><\/p>\n

But what to those who find?
\nAh! this nor tongue nor pen can show,
\nThe love of Jesus, what it is,
\nnone but His loved ones know.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus, our only joy be Thou,
\nas Thou our prize will be;
\nJesus be Thou our glory now,
\nand through eternity.<\/em><\/p>\n

O Jesus, light of all below,
\nthou fount of living fire,
\nSurpassing all the joys we know,
\nand all we can desire.<\/em><\/p>\n

Jesus, may all confess Thy name,
\nThy wondrous love adore,
\nAnd, seeking Thee, themselves inflame
\nto seek Thee more and more.<\/em><\/p>\n

Abide with us, and let Thy light shine,
\nLord, on every heart;
\nDispel the darkness of our night;
\nand joy to all impart.<\/em><\/p>\n
