Isaiah 53:12<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“<\/em>Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.”<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Back in 1913, Salvation Army Officer, George Bennard passed through a trying experience. This experience caused him to reflect seriously about the significance of the cross and, in particular, what the apostle Paul meant when he spoke of by entering into the fellowship of Christ’s suffering. While contemplating on these truths, Bennard was convinced that the cross was not just a religious symbol, but rather the very heart of the Gospel. He penned the words of this beloved hymn.<\/p>\n

Bennard spent the last years of his life a few miles north of Reed City, Michigan. At the age of 85, on October 9, 1968, he passed away. Near this home there still stands a twelve foot high cross with the words, “The Old Rugged Cross \u2013 Home of George Bennard,” composer of this beloved hymn.<\/p>\n

The Old Rugged Cross<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
\nThe emblem of suffering and shame;
\nAnd I love that old cross where the dearest and best
\nFor a world of lost sinners was slain.<\/em><\/p>\n

Refrain:<\/strong>
\nSo I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
\nTill my trophies at last I lay down;
\nI will cling to the old rugged cross,
\nAnd exchange it some day for a crown.<\/em><\/p>\n

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
\nHas a wondrous attraction for me;
\nFor the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
\nTo bear it to dark Calvary.<\/em><\/p>\n

Refrain:<\/strong>
\nSo I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
\nTill my trophies at last I lay down;
\nI will cling to the old rugged cross,
\nAnd exchange it some day for a crown.<\/em><\/p>\n

In that old rugged cross,
\nstained with blood so divine,
\nA wondrous beauty I see,
\nFor ’twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
\nTo pardon and sanctify me.<\/em><\/p>\n

\nSo I’ll cherish the old rugged cross,
\nTill my trophies at last I lay down;
\nI will cling to the old rugged cross,
\nAnd exchange it some day for a crown.<\/em><\/p>\n

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
\nIts shame and reproach gladly bear;
\nThen He’ll call me some day to my home far away,
\nWhere His glory forever I’ll share.<\/em><\/p>\n
