James 1:5 – Devotional

James 1:5

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.“

Wisdom is different than knowledge. I can recall as a teenager watch as college students taunted a brilliant student who possessed superior knowledge, but lacked the common sense to apply it to everyday life.

All of us may be aware or remember individuals who possessed superior mental ability, yet lacked the practical ability to use that great potential in ways that could be useful. They knew, but they could not apply!

God has graciously promised us His wisdom for our life. Our Scripture for today fills us with confidence that when we come to the Lord and seek His wisdom for our life, He will not fail us. The problem is that we fail to open the source of His wisdom – – THE BIBLE.

When we seek to know and understand God’s will for our life, we must spend time in the Bible. A walk in the park or a hike in the hills may invigorate us, but it will not provide us with His wisdom. God breathed on the writers of Scripture to give us what we need to know in order to live victoriously for Him. Receive it!

SWIFT TO HEAR​​​!

James 1:19-20 – Devotional

James 1:19-20

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.“

Many years ago I was attending a Christian Counselors Conference. One of the speakers related a counseling session he had with a man who was angry at his wife. He ranted and raved about how sloppy she was and how she neglected her duties of keeping the house clean and orderly.

As the counselor listened to the man tear his wife apart, he was silently praying for words with which to respond to the man. It suddenly became very quiet in the room and the counselor realized that the man was finished. Now it was the counselor’s turn to respond.

The counselor surprised the husband by agreeing with him, saying that he was married to such a terrible wife. Immediately the husband rose to his wife’s defense. He began to praise her for having a loving nature and spending time loving her family instead of cleaning. The husband left with a new view of his wife.

Are you looking for the good in others or are you so focused on their faults that you forget their strong qualities? Go for the gold and look for the best!

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let that person ask of God, who gives to all with liberation, and does not upbraid; and it shall be given. But let the request be made in faith, nothing wavering. For the person who wavers is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.“

ONLY FRESH WATER​​!

James 3:10-12 – Devotional

James 3:10-12

“Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.“

“Is that milk fresh?” Many times have we heard that question being asked and quite often it is followed by someone taking a sip of the milk that is in question. The response provides the answer: “Yuck!” Means it is sour and a smile indicates that it is fresh.

I often wonder about the freshness of our life? When people spend time around us are they prone to feel that same expression, yuck! I hope there’s a smile on their face such as follows a satisfying swig of sweet fresh milk!

We are told that when we are born again we are new creatures. The problem is all too often people do not live like new creatures but continue with habits and associations of the past. Like James says in today’s Scripture; “… these things ought not to be so.”

It is time to evaluate our spiritual life and determine whether it is fresh or sour.

A WISE MAN​​!

James 3:13 – Devotional

James 3:13

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.“

In the eyes of the world he may not have seemed wise, but to my mind and according to today’s Scripture, Ben was a wise man. Ben was an immigrant to this country from a European bloc nation. He spoke with a gravelly voice in an accent that was thick with his native tongue. But above everything else he loved the Lord.

Not only did Ben love the Lord, but he expressed it by the way he served Jesus. He did not teach a Bible class, but he lived his life according to the word of God. I can still recall watching him mow the lawn around the church on a hot summer day.

One day when I saw Ben mowing, I stopped to talk with him. I thought the church paid him for doing outside maintenance, but he did it because he saw a need. In my conversation with Ben I discovered that he also mowed lawns for several widows in the church who were unable to do it themselves and could not afford lawn care.

Ben was a wise man! His works for the Lord were done with meekness and love. I wish he was still alive today. I would enjoy a long visit with him. It will have to wait for eternity, but he is one WISE MAN I want to see again.
